This probably differs from school to school, but what grades does class ranking include? 9-11 obviously, but how does it include 12th? For example, for some colleges, the deadline for apps is months before the end of a schools first semester, so how can the counselor rank the students if first semester senior grades are not input?

well, the college will initially see the your rank up until the end of your junior year. THen, you send the midyear report and they’ll see your senior semester grades. At least, that’s what ive been told

If there’s a change in rank, if you go down from being #2 to #4 or something by the time you have to send the midyear report, does that affect your chances? Or do colleges put more emphasis on rank up to the end of junior year?

If you are applying RD, colleges will amend your file with the ranking after first semester and the mid-year report. The tip-top schools definitely want to see you hold your position rather than lose rank. However, much depends on your class size. If you drop to 4th in a class of 500 it won’t matter; 4th in a class of 40 and your percentile wobbles more.

Going from 2 to 4 in ranking isn’t a big deal. Going from 2 to 150 is a big deal. it won’t affect your chances if ranking changes slightly as long as your senior grades are fairly consistent with your previous grades.
