class registration confusion

I’m confused and hope someone can help. Can you use Penn Course Notify if both a lecture and all recitations are closed? What happens if a recitation opens? Are you automatically in the lecture? This doesn’t make much sense because what if while the student is signing up for one, another student is signing up for the other. Thanks for any clarification.

I think I just figured it out. You probably can’t get into the lecture unless you’re in a recitation. If I’m wrong, let me know. Thanks.

So you can get into a recitation without getting into a lecture?

So it turns out you can get into a recitation without getting into a lecture. However, now the site says that if the lecture doesn’t open up, you lose the recitation (and your back-up lecture, i.e., the lecture you are hoping to replace). So the person who got the lecture is in the same spot. Too bad they can’t link the lectures with the recitations.

I’m a current student. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about this at all. Classes fill up before a semester begins, but once the semester actual starts, people change around their schedules and spots open up. In my two years at Penn, there hasn’t been a single class I wanted that I didn’t get. I might not have gotten my preferred time/professor, but I always got in. But yes email the professor and then wait.
