hi guys. im having minor problems regarding class registration. hope you can help me out. i'm doing some scheduling already but my orientation session is in august. there's this window popping out saying "you do not have a valid enrollment appointment right now", or something like that. what is a "valid enrollment appointment" exactly? where can i get one? i see some of the people who attended their orientation have their class schedule already. does this "valid enrollment appointment" has something to do with the orientation? XD this seems like a really dumb question but i do need some help. Thanks!

Students that attending orientations A-G registered for classes while they were there. They were able to enter classes into SIS before their orientation on a planning only basis. Are you actually registering for classes? If so your process is different from the students in sessions A-G as they did not do theirs before hand. If you are not just trying to enter classes into SIS in preparation to register during your orientation, and are actually trying to register right now I would call someone for help.

Do not feel like this is a dumb question! We just got home from orientation G and my son registered, yet we are also still confused.

We understand that changes to schedules will occur after Aug. 1, but shouldn’t he be on the waitlist for some of those classes he is hoping to get into? Three classes on schedule work and two classes are alternates that he’d rather not be stuck with. He’s on the waitlist for only one alternate course. Does he have to wait until Aug. 1 to be placed on a waitlist for a second course?!

He tried to be placed on a waitlisedt class and same thing, up pops the “you do not have a valid enrollment appointment”. So am I to understand that even if you’ve already registered, you cannot make any changes until Aug. 1? And if so, what time is the best possible time to log on Aug. 1? I heard that the system is very slow that day, so at first I thought he could try at midnight, but that doesn’t make sense if people haven’t had the chance to drop unwanted classes yet.

OP, in your case, just add courses to your “planner”. They will give you a few hours to work on your schedule at orientation then the following day you will be able to register, but as you can see from my son’s issues, make sure to figure out plenty of back up courses. I wonder if you may have an easier time registering in Aug. when some of the closed classes have more space again? Your late orientation time may turn out to be in your favor :)

Maybe things have changed, but in prior years, those attending the mid-August Orientation have signed up for classes before orientation. Usually on or about July 31, so they have had a shot at classes before the schedule reopens on Aug. 1. OP, I would check your emails from UVa about this and I would look at your “home page” on SIS – in the far right column – where there is information on your enrollment date. You may have to hit a carrot to get the full info there. If you can’t figure it out from there, I suggest you call your school (Eng., CLAS, etc.) office and ask for help.

jkiwmom – the registration appointments at orientation are very rushed, and, unfortunately, those helping sometimes seem to be just pushing you through – once you have 15 hours they move you through without time for questions/reflection. Your son probably should have gotten on the wait list while at registration, but since he just went he probably is not too disadvantaged having to wait until 8/1.

There is no predicting movement of waitlists – one time I saw a class with 18 seats move 10+ students off the waitlist. There is an astonishing amount of movement at the beginning of the semester, but if your son does not get the classes he wants this time, there are other semesters to take most of the classes. My child had a number of classes first year that were not of his choosing, but he was able to get requirements out of the way with them. A hint going forward – registration times are randomly assigned, but, at least in CLAS in your second year for Spring and for Fall third year, priority is given to those who have declared a major. So once your son had decided on that, it pays to get that paperwork in early.

thank you all. problem (kind of) solved! turns out i have to wait until 7 a.m, 28th to actually register for classes. before that, all the work is just preparation.
