Classes and Books

I know we choose our classes during orientation, but do the advisors help you with it or should you have something made up before-hand. I'm in engineering and I know that there are certain classes to take by looking at the COE webpage but that's all I'm aware of.

Also, how and when do you buy books - is that during orientation too?

thanks for any help

i second these questions.

I would also appreciate answers to these questions.

S did not have anything figured out ahead of time. Just sat down with a very helpful faculty member and came up with a schedule that S was very happy with. Bought books before classes started in the Fall.

The bookstore won’t stock fall semester books until a week or two before classes begin, so no need to buy them before you get to school in september. Some people even wait for classes to start so that they can find out what will really be necessary, or buy them online if they’re cheaper.

Once it’s closer to semester start, you can go to the NEU bookstore website and find out which books are recommended/suggested for each course.

I just got back from orientation and I didn’t have anything figured out either. I had basically EVERYTHING worked out there. Plus, there is no way to figure out your classes beforehand because you don’t get the time schedule with your pre-registered major classes until you’re there. That means, that sometimes the classes that you might want will not work out because it will conflict with requirements, especially if you’re a science major like me (only one elective).

But what I would recommend you do is to go to here and start looking at classes that you might be interested in that aren’t already filled up.

good replies. What about declaring a minor? is that done at orientation too?

How do i find classes that are for electives?

re elective classes: since I have a S who is studying engineering I am more familiar with the COE web pages than the other schools, but on their site they have a link to electives, along with the curriculum guides for each engineering major; you might want to take a look at this list for ideas for electives:

http://www.coe.neu.edu/coe/pdfs/curricula/BS5/electives2.pdf

You aren’t even allowed to declare a minor until after you’ve almost finished it, or else everyone would go off declaring minors but never completing them. Plus I’d advise not locking yourself into a minor until you are certain you really like the classes of a certain field (NOT just the field itself). For example you might really like chemistry, but when you realize that you have to take gen chem, orgo, and upper level electives just for the minor, you might not consider it worth it. Often a minor branches out from an elective you really liked, so wait until you’ve taken a few to decide to “declare” a minor.
