My daughter applied to the UR to major in another field of study. Although she is interested in taking voice classes. Will she be able to take classes without having applied to the school of music?

Thank you

Yes, but she will have to audition for them. If she passes the audition, she will receive voice lessons from a graduate student from Eastman.

Here’s the relevant info about arranging the audition:

[Applied Music : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester](<a href=“Music Lessons (Applied Music) at Eastman : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester”>Music Lessons (Applied Music) at Eastman : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester)

She needs to arrange for her audition prior to arriving on campus for freshman orientation.

FWIW, there are only a limited number of slots available. Not all students who audition are able to receive lessons.

D2 auditioned for her instrument, but only 3 (!!) openings were available for the 7 students who auditioned. D2’s freshman roomie did take music lessons at Eastman and D2 said that sometimes factoring in travel time via shuttles made scheduling lessons difficult. Your D may need to have a 2.5-3 hour block available in order to accommodate lessons +travel time.

My d studied voice at Eastman all four years. As the other posters indicate, you need to audition for private voice lessons with an Eastman DMA graduate student. For freshman year first semester, the lessons are considered secondary. You need to pass a jury to advance to primary which are longer blocks of time. You need to pass an annual jury to continue.

It does take a chunk of time to get back and forth to Eastman but you can use the library there as well as eat lunch if you need to. Sometimes the lessons are on the River campus depending on the instructor’s schedule. Also unless this has changed since d graduated in 2010, freshman/sophomore practice rooms are in the building next to Sue B- old gym building, forgot the name. Junior/senior practice rooms are in Strong. Sometimes the Rochester Select Chorus performs with the Eastman chorus and there are extra rehearsals and you need to get yourself to the performance venue. My d’s teacher also had her participate in music competition that was held at Nazareth College during her freshman year and I think she and the other 1 or 2 students either took a cab or one had a car. In her case, she also babysat once or twice and once there was an opportunity to dogsit a visiting opera performer’s pooch for a day while she performed/taught Master Class at Eastman. Much competition for that gig, by the way!!!
