If I want to apply for Eastman School of Music

Do I have to apply for the University of Rochester as well?
Are their application process independent?
If I'm accepted by Eastman, do I have to be accepted by URoc?
What if I want to have a dual major? One in music and one in science?

If I want to apply for a composition major, do I just need to send them my compositions, or I need to go there to have a real-time audition?

Thank you

You can apply to Eastman alone as a stand alone music school if you only wish to get a degree from there and that is all you need do. If you want to get into their joint program and get a dual degree (let’s say a BS in science, BM in performance), you have to apply to both programs and get accepted to both. And yes, the application process is independent as far as I can tell although I believe you have to let both sides know it is a dual degree program.

You need to submit a portfolio for the pre screen along with your application, which includes transcripts and such (talking Eastman now, with U Roc you would need to submit transcripts, test scores, etc if doing a dual program), if they decide to see you, you have to do an interview/audition on campus for the composition program (I guess to audition you on your instrument, sounds like comp majors need to have one going in).

BTW, I double checked this, and in general a lot of these questions can be answered on their website, it is where I double checked my answers.

While double majoring there is possible, the logistics make it difficult. The conservatory is nowhere near the River Campus so the shuttle bus is taken back and forth between campuses. The classes are arranged so as to help, one campus on the hour, the other on the half-hour, but weather and drop off location on the River Campus can add extra time. I know kids who have done it successfully and some who have dropped one half of the “majors”. Just keep it in mind and ask plenty of questions when you visit!

We did a tour of Eastman a few months ago. We were told that you could get a minor in a non-music subject at the University of Rochester without having to actually apply to the university.
