I have my orientation coming up next week, monday and tuesday.
I have a few classes that I want/plan on taking.
What classes is everyone taking for autumn quarter?
And if any present college students can recommend classes, it would
be much appreciated (:

Mostly everyone I talked to is doing a FIG (Freshman Interest Group). It is a good way to meet some friends since you will be having classes with the same group of people, and also a good way to get into classes that are otherwise full. You can look online at the choices of FIGs, im doing FIG 41 which is astronomy 101 and eng 199, and gen studies which is the fig class. I also added on econ 200 so I don’t fall behind on credits.

Just to add on, the official number the orientation leaders quoted us was 70 % of incoming freshman sign up for figs.

I have the same orientation as you too!
I’m picky, none of the FIGs interest me. The ones w/a class I want comes w/one I don’t want/need… So I’ve been looking at the time schedule to see which classes are available and trying to map my own schedule.
Right now the only class I know for sure is chem145 and probably math126… then if I can, add a history class too.

Yeah, I’m not really interesting in FIGS.
My friends at the UW said they were a waste of time. I guess it’s a hit or miss.
and since I took ENG 111 and ENG 131 in high school, it’s hard to pick a FIG.
I’m thinking about taking MATH 124 for sure…
CHEM? ART? Sociology?

FIGs are a waste of time and if you have a fair number of credits coming in (AP, IB, Running Start) they’re totally pointless. If you’re starting with 0, though, they’re a great way to meet people throughout the quarter.

Honestly, just look for classes that are a) open, b) not too early or late, c) taught by a person with a brain (ratemyprofessors.com = godsend) and d) located within 10 minutes of the classes before and after, if back-to-back. I would caution against starting a highly competitive series like MATH 124,5,6 or CHEM 142,52,62 fall quarter. If you don’t join a FIG, try and sign up for at least one class with fewer than 60 people.

From a practical standpoint, don’t register for classes in the evening in distant locations. It’s light enough now to walk by yourself at 9:00 but it won’t be by November. To put it bluntly, there is a lot of crime in the U District.

I do not agree with lautia. I have almost one full year of credits coming into UW (35) and I will be in a FIG and don’t believe it is completely pointless. It allowed me to get into classes that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get into, and also will allow me to meet people and ease into college. I added another class on top of the FIG so I will actually be ahead of the majority of Freshman because I am taking 17 credits.

Duly noted. You make fair points – and adding another 5 credits is a good move, too.

Moving away from the topic of FIGs… haha
Do you guys think it’s a good idea for my to take math AND chem during first quarter?
I’m planning on taking math, since I’ll probably forget everything if I take it later on…
and Psych 101? during winter quarter.

Sociology? Art?

I’ll be coming in with >90 credits (from Running Start at WSU)…should I do a FIG? It’s kinda weird because my class standing is Junior, but I’m taking things in stride.

A FIG might be interesting, but it seems like the combination of classes that I want isn’t there. So I’ll have to see.

i did dual-enrollment (same thing as running start, it’s just what we call it in FL) and i earned my AA. i went to a&o and they said that if you are not listed as a freshman (you>45 cr), you actually can’t take a FIG, but you can take a TRIG (same thing). they actually have a “former running start” TRIG. it’s one where you just register for the 2 credit TRIG class and any classes that you want… so you are able to pick and choose your own classes, which is nice. they also have other TRIGs where your classes are chosen for you.

sumzup: If you have that many credits, it will be pretty difficult to find a FIG that satisfies your remaining requirements. But if classes sound interesting, I say go for it. You won’t get many chances beyond frosh year to take a load of classes that are both interesting and easy. :p

banksg: Whoa, thanks. I had no idea this existed. I will definitely check it out and sign up when I go to A&O next week!

thewu: Yeah, it’s really great that I have so many credits because I have a lot of flexibility…I’m planning on exploring a lot of interesting classes (Sanskrit, for one, and maybe Astronomy) before moving on to some hardcore engineering stuff.
