What are some colleges where I can take classes in graphic design, film, photography, but largely focus/major in graphic design? I want a college that has an open visual arts curriculum, but that has an opportunity to concentrate in graphic design (which I'm not sure many colleges have?)

Thanks for any suggestions

lpage3, There are numerous options.

RIT is very well known in photography and has a very good graphic design program too.

RISD is strong as both, but probably not as good as RIT in photography

You might also want to check out Pratt Institute

My daughter is majoring in Digital Design at University of Cincinnati. She gets some digital photography, graphic design and motion and animation in her major.

Too many to list? Is there an area of the country you prefer? Do you want to go to a LAC or an art college? How much money do you want to spend?

^I’d prefer East coast, but Midwest is fine too, just nothing all the way out West. I’d prefer LACs. Money doesn’t matter.

How are your grades and test scores? Depending on your grades and SATs, some of these may suit you better than others; but all are broad colleges that have good art programs, and which offer the type of variety you want, while also offering the opportunity to get enough GD under you to be able to enter the profession:

New York University (I believe you can take some film courses as a art major there, but you’d want to check quite specifically)

Tufts (you’d do a dual degree with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston)

Northeastern (again, a dual degree with SMFA Boston)

Brown (you’d do a dual degree with RISD)

Syracuse

Yale

Carnegie Mellon

Columbia U

Temple U

Rochester Institute of Tech

Rutgers New Brunswick

U Georgia

U Illinois Urbana

U Indiana Bloomington

U Michigan Ann Arbor

Virginia Commonwealth

Please note that at some of these, you’d specifically be a GD major, while at others, you’d be an art major with a GD focus.

My son is a visual arts major concentrating in graphic design at SUNY New Paltz. They have a highly regarded program there.

New Paltz was one of those I’d had on my list, but took off because my list was getting too long.

Spoken like a true non-parent. LOL :)

Seriously, it looks like a great combination to look for.

Siena College has a creative arts major with graphic design concentration, albeit not the most highly regarded school for art.

I don’t think I want to be an art major, but plan on taking as many graphic design courses as possible. I think it’s a great resume-builder to be able to say you’re proficient in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.-especially for something like marketing/advertising, which is what I want to do!

Boston University. Their College of Fine Arts is excellent for graphic design.

Understand a couple of things. First, BFA programs eat time both with requirements and a lot of work. Second, film is a whole different ballgame with a whole different set of requirements that you would likely not have time for.
