First of all, sorry if I annoy some of you by continuously starting new threads on the berkeley forum. I just have a lot of things to worry about, or at least things I feel I should worry about.

I'm a freshman bioE major next fall and I was asking which classes to take that I am for sure can get into as they do not have waitlists and have a lot of people sign up. I am asking as I actually will be late in starting my fall semester in Berkeley. I haveto be in hong kong until august 19th. I asked my advisor, and she said that I probably have to sign up for classes that still have seats open as it is probable that some high-demand classes will kick me out even if I miss only the first day.

Anyways...back to the original question.
Here is my major requirements:
Major Requirements
Here are the classes I am thinking about taking for my first semester (I think all of them r in really high-dmand, but Im not sure):
Reading and composition b (is this required? I have the "a" component done with ib credits)
Chem 112A (though it says for 2nd semester)
Physics 7a (though again it says 2nd semester)
E 10/7
BioE 24/25
Math 53
Engineering/biology presentation
Or 2 music-related breadth requirements

These r alot of classes, and remember, I am asking only for first semester, not year

Again, sorry for all the questions! Appreciate any help!

Engineering does not allow escaping R&C B with AP or IB credit.

Chemistry 112A has a prerequisite of Chemistry 1B or 4B. You may want to search for “Chemistry 1A final exam” and “Chemistry 1B final exam” on the Berkeley web site so that you can compare what you know from IB chemistry to what Berkeley Chemistry 1A and 1B teach. Bioengineering does not actually require Chemistry 112A; you can take the less rigorous Chemistry 3A, which lists only Chemistry 1A as a prerequisite. Note that Chemistry 1A and 3A will be huge due to all of the biology majors and pre-meds taking them; Chemistry 1B, 4A, 4B, 112A, and 112B will not be as large (4A, 4B, 112A, and 112B are mainly chemistry and chemical engineering majors).

You can take Physics 7A if you have had the equivalent of Math 1A, which you presumably have since you want to take Math 53. Physics 7A is a heavily impacted course, so use your Phase I sign up for it.

You may want to see the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html for math course selection.

Do the breadth requirement courses usually have a lot of room? I assume E 10 and 7 have a huge number of ppl as practically all engineering majors need to take it. Am I right? I’ll probably still do chem 112a as i love organic chem. also, what is phase one and two? When do prefrosh sign up for courses?

Also, is there a way to secure my place in a class no matter how late I am and no matter how many of the beginnign classes I miss (not saying Im gonna skip classes, just saying missing the first few classes due to forementioned scheduling problem)

There is no general answer. Some courses found in the breadth requirement lists are very popular and tend to fill up quickly. Make a list of several breadth courses you would like to take; watch the schedule in the days leading up to your CalSO (when you sign up for courses) so that you can change your list if your initial choices get too full.

You may want to start here for more information on what courses you need for your major, what your IB and AP credit counts for, and what courses fulfill the humanities and social studies requirement. Go through the links on the left, and the documents on the bottom right.

I looked for availability for classes in fall 2012 semester, and none of the classes were filled up, a lot of empty spaces. Of course these spaces will quickly be filled up by prefrosh after calso (which I cant attend sadly). Here is my tentative schedule I plan on doing:
Chem 112A
Music 128
Anthro r5b
BioE 10
BioE 24

Do u think any of these classes will have huge waitlists and a probability that I cant take them do to no available seats left? Basically, Im asking if these courses r usually in high demand and with little seats open. Also, since I cant attend calso, when do I sign up for classes for phase 1?

Be flexible about reading and composition courses; have alternates whose reading lists you find interesting available in case your favorite one fills up (they are small, so they fill up easily, but there are also many others to choose from).

Wow, u reply to all my questions. Thanks! Do u much about the other courses? The chem and bioE courses looked pretty large (200-600)

Am I missing something here? Classes don’t actually start until August 23, by which time you should be back… Btw, it’s kind of a big deal missing the first day of any class. The only way you might manage it without being dropped is if you emailed the professor beforehand and I wasnt a big/ pre-req class.

Oh, I read fall semester begins on aug 16th, but then read that classes begin on the 23rd. So am I okay if I get to berkeley on the 19th? R u saying that all my worrying was for nothing?
if this istrue, then im pretty stupid :P

Yes, fall semester/move in is the 16, but classes don’t actually start until the 23rd. You won’t miss anything except for some welcome week events. No big deal.

Wow, thanks! Im still abit worried about being on waitlists tho. Especially since I cant attend calso
why must I be an oos-er D:
