Classes to take

Hello everybody,

I just signed up in hopes of getting some advice from anybody and everybody who can help.

I'm in ninth grade and I have been raised with the mindset that it is never too early to prepare for college. I have always been a straight-A student.

I don't exactly know what the best route for me to take is in order to attend college and perhaps get a scholarship. Unfortunately, I have no fund set up for me by my family and nobody around me has anywhere near enough money to put me through college -- so a scholarship is greatly desired. I have always wanted to eventually become some sort of doctor... so medicine is my major of choice, and I still desire to pursue that.

Here are the classes I have taken thus far:

[Alg. I, Geometry and Spanish I in middle school.]

Spanish II

Biology Honors

Algebra II Honors

English I Honors

Semantics & Logic // Photography 1 (Each one semester only)

Health/P.E.

Computing for College/Careers

[American Government through FLVS]

I recently completed programming for next year, and here is what I've got lined up:

English II Honors

Chemistry Honors

Pre-Calculus (Honors?)

Web Design

Psychology I // Drivers Ed. (Each one semester only)

AP World History

AP Biology

My current concern is foreign language. I have heard various responses to this matter. Some say that two years is sufficient; some say I should go all the way with a single language; some say that I should do at least three years.
It has been suggested that since I'm interested in pursuing medicine, taking Latin would be a good idea... So I figure I will end with Spanish 2 and take Latin I & II my Junior and Senior year (or perhaps take them online over summers). What do you all recommend for foreign language? I'm great at Spanish, and my current teacher pulled me aside to specifically tell me to make sure I sign up for Sp. III. I originally did but I decided to replace it with AP Bio.

What should I do in this situation? Leave my schedule the way it is and take Latin later on? Switch AP Bio back to Spanish 3? Replace one of my electives with Spanish 3 (will that be too much of a workload)? Or wait until Junior year to take Spanish 3 (should I really skip a year without it?) and take Latin online?

I'm really at a loss as to what the best decisions are...

Are you from Tampa?

Yes indeed. How did you know? :p

Ignore my Join date. I actually have been here a while.

Now I suggest that you beef up your schedule a bit and forget about it.
There are MUCH more important things you should be worrying about.

Make sure to self-study at least 3 APs freshman year. you don’t want to get bogged down with crappy APs in the later years.

And. DO NOT SKIP AP BIO. unless you’re self studying it and goin to college bio.

forget spanish. self study latin I and II. take online courses. whatever. make sure you are in at least Latin II by sophomore year.

this is coming from a fellow freshman, so i understand your situation.
Take ap chem and ap english if u can.

forget web design. waste of time. do ap physics or something.

never take pointless electives. Core classes are essential. perhaps a college anatomy and physiology class?

self study some a&p with the martini book.

Colleges don’t want to see 2 years of this language and 2 years of that language. Take Spanish III at some point at least. It also really depends on where you want to get in.

BTW, I’m pretty sure medicine is not a major. To be a doctor you’d likely be majoring in Biology or Chemistry.

LOL Thank you for not reading the original post.

I would highly recommend that the op not take courses for which he or she does not have the prerequisites.

yea i agree. do latin or spanish. spanish is horrible though. i dont recommend it.

Did you just agree with yourself?

“Colleges don’t want to see 2 years of this language and 2 years of that language. Take Spanish III at some point at least. It also really depends on where you want to get in.”

Nah. This is just to get back at the mods for banning me.

This account is probably gonna get banned soon. lol.

Don’t take more than one language in high school. Best case scenario is that you take four years of the same language (in your case, probably Spanish II (H), III (H), AP Lang, AP Lit). I personally don’t feel that Latin is absolutely necessary for a career in medicine, though it may help. If you so choose you can take it online.

I recommend switching out Web Design for Spanish III Honors, unless that’s something that you really enjoy. It won’t be too rigorous for you; you’re a straight A student and will be able to handle it. Also, take Honors Precalculus.

Yes, I would be majoring in something of that nature. My implication was that some sort of pre-medicine program is what I’m interested in.

-

Regarding the self-study: I’ve never considered this as an option. Unfortunately, I do not feel confident in myself that I’d be able to learn the material on my own. Is it really not that difficult? Where exactly would I obtain the proper study materials?

I don’t want to give up too many electives because I feel that my schedule will be too overwhelming. I don’t mind a challenge, but there is a point where it becomes too much. And yes, I’m sure that this isn’t a good outlook since I’m wanting to accel very far…

I think I should take Spanish 3 online next year (sophomore). This allows for extra flexibility as well as completing it in consecutive-years. Then if I get around to taking Latin (whether it be online or at physical school), then I can just take it.

Hmm. Easy. Get the prep books. Refer to the AP consolidated books thread in the AP test prep forum.

This is MY schedule.
I don’t suggest you do something like this for a pre-med lol.
