I will be an incoming freshman and I was wondering how many classes should I take. I know that the bare minimum is 12 units.
Since UCSB is on the quarter system, the recommendations are usually 13-15 units to help ease you into the fast pace of the quarter system and college in general. Your advisor can give you tips/words of wisdom when you register for classes during orientation.
You need 45 units during your first three quarters to become a sophomore. That averages out to 15 per quarter. If you take less during your first quarter (which is common), you need to make it up another quarter.

If you come in with AP/IB or DE credit, then you can reach that 45 unit threshold sooner and ease up on your classes first quarter.
