For those current students or parents of current students, what is campus like once football season is over? Do students go to basketball games? Is is just about the frat parties? My son has narrowed his list down to Clemson, University of Miami, U of Florida and VT. (for business) UF and Miami definitely have more going on in the surrounding area and I’m pretty sure all sports are widely attended at VT. Just looking for a little insight. We will be visiting Clemson and Miami for accepted student day (these seem to be his top 2), but I feel like that’s just whoever puts on a better show!! Not a real feel for the school. Any input will be helpful. Thanks in advance.
You’ll find students choosing to fill their time however they want. Obviously it’s much quieter spring semester, but lots go to basketball and other sporting events. There is nearby hiking and some outdoor trips offered through the rec center. There are intramurals (these are year round) going on as well and a majority of students participate in them. Many students take a heavier class load, or study abroad spring semester to take advantage of the time. There would ample time to work on a Creative Inquiry or internship on campus. If they want parties, they’ll find them. If not, they’ll find other things to do. A slower pace and time to sleep has been good this spring for my tigers and their friends.
@mamawitch My daughter has been to quite a few basketball games and they have been fun. @Baxter126 don’t forget Spring Football…
April 6th!
Thanks @Baxter126 & @burghdad
Spring football?? I didn’t know about that!! We’ll be there April 5th, but fly out April 6th. What a bummer. That would’ve been fun for him.
He would love the intramurals. I don’t think that’s as big at Miami.
@mamawitch yes the spring game is April 6 which is a pretty big deal there. They get a very big crownd. It is actually going to be televised nationally on ESPN as it was last year…
@mamawitch my son is between UF and Clemson. He hates the Florida heat and would like to go somewhere with better year round weather. He also likes that Clemson (school) is smaller than UF. I do worry a little bit about the size of the town.
@xn3mom My niece is at UF and loves it. But she’s had a fair amount of online classes. I know they say you can still go to the class or it frees up space to take a class that may conflict time wise, but I don’t like it. I also think it’s too big. I like that Clemson is big, but not a city!!! My son knows Clemson is my pick so I’m trying to keep quiet. I feel like he’s drawn to the Miami weather!! We live in Maine so 78 and sunny looks pretty good when it’s 24 and dreary!!
@mamawitch Clemson is my pick too. I also worry about online classes at UF, but my son is engineering and it doesn’t seem to be an issue in that college. If weather is important, my two cents is that the weather is better in Clemson. In Florida, he’ll be hot the first month or two of the fall semester and late spring semester. That said, I have several friends who moved down from up north and said they’ll gladly take the Florida heat over the cold winters.
@xn3mom I tell him the warmth seems great when we’re freezing up here, but when it’s always hot it’ll get old. I agree Clemson has better weather. It’d be nice to have some changes in temp. Will you be going to accepted student day on April 5th?
@mamawitch Yes we are!
@xn3mom I’m so excited for that. This is my oldest and 1st time so I have no idea what to expect!!
@mamawitch My son is playing and refereeing (for pay) intramural soccer this semester. He gave us the impression that intramural sports are pretty popular at Clemson. (Trevor Lawrence played IM basketball after the football season.)
My son only went to one basketball game, but wants to go to a few baseball games. He also took a heavier classload as noted by @Baxter126.
