Clemson or University of South Carolina

I am a current OOS senior student looking at these two school. I was provisionally accepted into Clemson and accepted to SC just last week. I visited both schools, but had only a tour at Clemson because at the time I did not expect to like SC. However, I fell in love with the small part of the campus that I saw and hope to go back soon to see the whole thing. I have also applied to both honors colleges. Other than the obvious scenery differences, what are the main differences in the two? Thanks for the help!

I live in SC, Clemson is a much, much better school and is getting harder and harder to get into. They are raising their admission standards and in a couple of years a Clemson education will be highly sought after, it’s a no brainier, go to Clemsen. Just my 2 cents.

Do you prefer an urban setting or a more rural setting? What is your proposed major? I suggest meeting with representatives from the Honors colleges to get a feel for fit. I agree that Clemson is getting harder to get into , but that can also be said for USC and other SC schools. You have to go where you feel most comfortable . My son also had provisional acceptance at Clemson and was admitted to Calhoun Honors , but declined the offer for admission to attend a school which he felt was more suited to him personally , and offered better opportunities for his major . There is no absolute answer for everyone. Each school has its merits.

@carolinamom2boys I could go either way for urban or rural. I would like to major in Statistics; however, at Clemson it would be mathematical sciences with a concentration in statistics. And I love Clemson as well, I will just need a substantial amount of scholarships in order to go there.

How much do you need to make Clemson affordable? Standard OOS scholarship so far is $15,000 per year.

This is from Clemson’s website. Info regarding scholarships .https://www.clemson.edu/financial-aid/types/scholarships/clemson-scholarship-recruiting.html

@carachel2 OOS scholarships begin at 7500 depending on stats , GPA and rank .

Oops yes-- I should’ve said “max” so far not standard. So sorry!

@carachel2 I would probably need around $20,000 in scholarships to go there. I plan on applying to A LOT of outside scholarships and I have a great GPA and class rank, but my rSAT is only a 1350 so I think I should get $7,500- $10,000, but $15,000 seems unlikely. I could get loans, but I think I will get a better deal from USC.

@carolinamom2boys did your son get accepted into the USC Honors College?

He didn’t apply to USC Honors. He attends The Honors College of College of Charleston. @Stressed2016 Be aware that many outside scholarships are one time only scholarships and not renewable. Also, many times schools reduce their offers when outside scholarships are factored in. Good luck to you. You will also only be able to take out 5500.00 in loans in your name as a Freshman.
