Clemson or Virginia Tech for engineering

I have been accepted to both Clemson and Virginia Tech in engineering, yet I have no idea where to attend. I live in Virginia so Tech would be cheaper, but people are telling me not to worry about the money. My parents said they would move to SC if I choose to attend Clemson, to get instate for the last couple years. I have visited both schools and they are just so close. I like Clemson's location and the smaller amount of students, but my sister went Tech and it's cheaper. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated :)

Virginia Tech is the much highly regarded engineering program (AND it’s cheaper for you) so I would go there.

There easy enough haha

This may not work.

There are lots of hoops to jump through to establish residency for in-state tuition. With some schools you keep whatever status you had when you entered the school, even if your parents move to the state.

You would need to investigate this carefully if this is an important consideration.

Clemson is great (I just visited), but Virginia Tech would be the way to go

What are some reasons that Tech is the way to go?

US News engineering rankings:

Virginia Tech #15
Clemson #66

Yes, your parents can move to SC so you can get in-state tuition but honestly it is not worth the bother in this scenario for them to do so. Let your parents enjoy their life in Virginia and you can get a fantastic education as well.

Hey, it turns out that I am also from Virginia making that exact same desision. I am choosing to go to Clemson though for multiple reasons.

  1. I want to go somewhere different, meet new people, and get out of my Virginia comfort zone.
  2. VT has a hire ranking but that is mostly because it is heavily research based. A lot of the professors are great at engineering but not so great at teaching, from what I hear. Where as Clemson has one of the best teaching and learning environments for a public school in the nation.
  3. For me personally, Clemson is a better fit because it is very much a preppy jock school, which is what I am, spot on. Tech is definitely a great school but the kids on a daily basis are a little drab for me.
  4. Clemson has the best career services office in the nation and 100% of the engineering grads had jobs last year if they weren’t going to grad school or the military.
  5. Lastly, Tech students are very competitive, especially in the engineering department, and that’s not my thing. I would rather spend my time working together learning then competing against everyone else in my class. Simple a that.
Tech is an awsome school with great food and facilities but it’s not the place for me. Take into consideration the things I said above and if those are factors that would really sway you than go with that. It really is all about what you want from a college. I would also think about what college you would love even if you decided to major in something other than engineering. For me that’s Clemson but for you it could be tech. As cheesy as it sounds it’s all about what feels right. Best of luck to you! Just remember, you can’t really go wrong with either school. I hope that I was some help.

On paper, Virginia Tech is a better choice than Clemson but as always there are many factors that go into a college choice and you may like Clemson more than VT. If you can afford both financially, there really isn’t a bad choice here.

Thanks for all yalls input! I will be attending Tech in the fall. I’ve been going to Tech ever since I was 6 because my sister went there. I loved it then and I think I always will plus I can go to Tech for under 5k a year and Clemson would be over 30k. Can’t beat that :)

p.s. Tech kids are not drab. Hokie spirit is amazing!

Way to go. Go Hokies! You will love the Engineering School!
