Clemson versus James Madison

From NJ. Son is considering both schools. Wants business. Not sure which school is more reputable/selective for OOS. Son likes the south. Has sister is at UNC-CH. Concerned about deep south and weekend emptying of campus after football season. Is a frat a good idea for northerner who wants to make new friends? Any insight or thoughts welcome.

Clemson is not know for their business program. I dont know much about JMU though. The University of South Carolina has a good int’l business program.

My daughter is at James Madison and there seems to be lots of kids from New Jersey there. My understanding is that the business program is very competitive and I have heard that the job placement rate is excellent. It is ranked higher than Clemson by Business Week. Kids are very happy at JMU - the campus is great - food is top notch and the new dorms are beautiful.

S was accepted to Clemson 4 years ago. He decided not to attend because he felt the town was too tiny and that too much focus was on the sports, especially football.
As a runner, he tended to prefer schools that didn’t revere the big-money sports.
If you are a rah-rah type of person, it could be fabulous. It’s a nice campus and has a gorgeous lake where you can kayak, water ski, etc. Also, the engineering programs are considered quite good and the liberal arts offerings (his area of interest) seemed to be varied and of high quality.

But Clemson, the town, is a very small place. I don’t have any information re the level of suitcase students who leave on weekends. But I do know that some kids from our area who went there became rabid Clemson fans.

I would think they are largely the same in terms of academic quality.

JMU has lots of female students. Guys who attend there clearly do not complain. Business school is good and so is the computer science program.

Clemson’s engineering programs are fine but it still has the look and feel of a sports team with a college attached. I competed there a few times in my college days (the lakes were beautiful). It shares a mediocre academic reputation with Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Lots of fun there, though. It would take some focus to get the most rigor available out of Clemson.

Don’t know much fisthand about JMU (a cousin .VA res…went there years ago and liked it a lot). I know quite a few people (all from the south) who went to Clemson and loved it. All are rabid fans for life. Football is huge. S1 attended several games with his gf’s family and thought it was awesome but the town is pretty small.
A friend who majored in Business/Finance at Clemson has done well for himself and his family working in the investments industry.
