I was looking into self studying and taking some CLEP exams over the summer. I have taken some AP classes junior + senior year, but I would like to earn more credit to get a head start before next year. Would you advise this? I'm thinking of doing pre-med, so this would allow me to move into the more difficult courses sooner. These are the AP classes I have taken:

Junior year-
Computer Science AB - 4
Calculus AB - 3

Senior year-
Physics C
Calculus BC
Psychology

I was thinking of doing this for Chemistry, since I didn't take the AP chem course. If you pass the CLEP exam, you get credit for CHM1020. If you pass the AP exam, you get credit for CHM1020 and CHM1020L for a score of 3. Is it possible to just sign up for the chem lab and take that during the fall? It would be more convienant to take the CLEP exam during the summer, since I have the AP Psych exam on the same day as the AP chem exam.

I understand that you get credit for AP/CLEP, but not a grade. I know that you can only transfer in 45 credits toward your major, and 30 credits to fulfill liberal arts requirements. Would I be better off self studying and taking the CLEP, or taking the AP, or just taking the actual class. Thanks!

The lab and lecture don't have to be taken in the same semester. So you should be able to take just CHM1020L by itself but I would assume that course would be worthless to a pre-med major. It is "baby" chemistry for non-majors.
The 1020 courses are just to get the liberal studies lab science credit. I am sure you would need real general chemistry CHM1045 and CHM1045L.

ah okay, I see your point. They just put "General Chemistry" on the requirement list, so I wasn't sure if 1020 would count.

If you take the AP exam and get a 4, you get these credits:
Gen Chem 1:CHM 1045 (3)
Gen Chem 1 Lab:CHM 1045L (1)

A 5 gets you these credits:
Gen Chem 1:CHM 1045 (3)
Gen Chem 1 Lab:CHM 1045L (1)
Gen Chem 2:CHM 1046 (3)
Gen Chem 2 Lab:CHM 1046L (2)

I wonder if I could get a 4 or 5 on the AP exam through self study... If not, I imagine it would prepare me for taking the real class. Thanks for your help!

Honeslty, I don't think you could get a 4 or 5 through self-study. It's not an easy exam...you'd also need to have lab experience, which would be difficult when self-studying.

Don't forget you want to give yourself some time to adapt to the university. Leave some lower level courses to help you learn how they do things and still get decent grades.

It probably is a good idea to CLEP out of courses that are purely for liberal studies credit, but it might not be a good idea to test out of something that is the foundation for future studies unless you are confident you have mastered the material.

If you take the CLEP exam for chemistry and get CHM1020 credits, that will get you 3 credits for the $70 or so spent on taking the exam. Having extra credits is an advantage in scheduling unless you are in honors who have priority anyway. It could count as an elective even if it does not advance you towards your major.

Ok I understand, thanks for all your input. Maybe I will take a class over the summer instead of trying to test out of taking it. I could do it for the English Composition CLEP since my SAT/ACT score won't give me the ENC1101 credit, and I didn't take AP english composition.

I am curious, can I take an AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) exam in the US? There is hardly any information about them on the internet.

I have a College Algebra clep test the weekend after since although I can bypass the class with my SAT/ACT score (like Pistolen08 in English) I won't get credit. The syllabus for the current class looks like it would be a year of nothing new, which is what prompted my decision to clep. I'd rather not go farther in math than I must, much more interesting subjects than math to spend my semesters on! And like cybermom suggested, I want a little more wiggle-room in my schedule.
I'm also considering either self-studying (or perhaps an online course) in macroeconomics in prep to clep. Having just come out of a broader economics course last semester with more than usual interest and comprehension I thought I might as well consider that test. A quick practice review/practice lead me to believe self-studying is definitely possible without much difficulty. Any experience with that clep test? Or even in general when it comes to clep test advice?

I know FLVS has an AP Micro class, maybe you could take that? I personally hated taking those FLVS classes, but maybe you might learn that way. You wouldn't have to pay the AP exam fee if you took the class :)

Good luck on your CLEP exam!

I was looking at the Credit by Examination site on FSU. I am currently in Physics C, and we are only doing the Mechanics aspect this year. The most that I can get credit for is 1 semester (PHY 2053C for a 3). However, the Physics B exam will give you 2 semesters with a 4 (PHY 2053C and PHY 2054C). Since these are both of the pre-med pre-reqs for physics, I would be all set. I have no idea why I picked C over B, but perhaps I could change 2nd semester. I will talk to my guidance counselor tomorrow, and see if I can switch. That is so dumb that an easier course gives you more credits!!

Since I will have my math, psychology, and physics pre-reqs out of the way, I would only have to do Chem I II, Organic Chem I II, Biochem, Bio I II, and possibly genetics.

Since I have to fill 6 hours of English credit, I think I will take the English CLEP exam, unless I can improve my SAT reading to a 650. That will take care of 3 hours, then I guess English II? Does anyone know if ENL 1000 would take the place of the remaining 3 hours? Because the CLEP literature exam would give me credit for that. Thanks for your help!

Students must complete either ENC 1101 (or 1121) and a second course from the following list. Most students take ENC 1102 (or 1122) as the second course.

ENC 1101W Freshman Composition and Rhetoric (3)

ENC 1102W Freshman Writing, Reading, and Research (3)

ENC 1121W Freshman Composition and Rhetoric: Honors (3)

ENC 1122W Freshman Writing About Literature: Honors (3)

Not sure if this is still the case, but I was able to skip the first two English classes at FSU by taking a departmental examination. This could be something to research... ;)

(Yep - I am going to make you find the FSU Registrar's website and look it up for yourselves... :D)

kaitlin-
Oh, that's kinda dumb that you have to pay. I figured that since the school pays regularly, they would pay if you took it on FLVS. my bad :O

Why do you say you don't need it? It will fill the Social Science liberal arts credit (Psychology took care of that one in my case).

Does anyone know what PET 4253 Lesbian and Gay Sport Studies (3) is?
Is it about famous athletes that are homosexual? I'm not gay, the name just jumped out at me as unusal for a class.
