I'm a high school senioor planning to go to UF taking these AP's in high school AP calculus AB, american government, microeconomics, and human geography.

I already received a 3 on US History and a 4 on AP Statistics....

Is it worth it for me to take ANY CLEP classes at my local community college? I know I could easily pass College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and probably the Calculus Elementary functions tests, but is it worth it given that I will likely receive AP Credit for AP Calculus?

There are some other CLEP classes like the Computer Information test that looks fairly easy.

In other words, is it worth it to take these even though for the math one, I have AP Calculus and should I take the other easy ones that aren't AP equivalents?

Everyone needs to take College Algebra and UF requires 9 MATH credits, BUT if you have already taken AP Stats and you are currently in AP Calc ...

You passed AP Stats, you have 3 math credits.

If you pass AP Calc AB, you'll have 4 more credits, totalling 7 credits.

UF requires 9 math credits...so you SHOULD take Clep college algebra..,

It'll save you time and money, that's for sure. I've heard it's like Algebra II Honors in high school, so you shouldn't really need to study.

You can also take other CLEP tests, but make sure that your total of CLEP+AP credits is under 30, bc anything over 30 will not transfer.

Happy clep-ing!

BTW,
AP Stat - 3 credits
AP US His - 3 credits
AP Calc - 4 credits (if you pass)
AP US Govt - 3 credits (if you pass)
AP Micro - 3 credits ( if you pass)
AP Human - 3 credits (if you pass)
this is a total of, 19 credits ... meaning you can take three CLEP tests and be under the 30 max line.

It looks like it is well worth it to take CLEP college algebra, but other than that I really don't know what is "worth" it? Any suggestions? btw I plan to major in Computer Science (Engineering)

Well, CLEP credits usually cover the General Education requirements, and the Gen Ed requirements at UF are as follows:

General education requires 36 credits of courses in the following areas:
3 credits of Composition (C)
3 credits of Diversity (D)*
9 credits of Humanities (H)**
3 credits of International (N)*
6 credits of Mathematics (M)
9 credits of Physical and Biological Sciences (P) and (B)**
9 credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences (S)**

You have:

AP Stat - 3 credits (M)
AP US His - 3 credits (H)
AP Calc - 4 credits (if you pass) (M)
AP US Govt - 3 credits (if you pass) (S)
AP Micro - 3 credits ( if you pass) (S)
AP Human - 3 credits (if you pass) (S) and (N)
With CLEP college algebra, that would be another (M).
And after that, you could only take two more CLEP tests...to be under 30.

So basically, you would have your required math done. You would need to take ENC1101. You would need to take a diversity credit (D). You would need two more (H) humanities classes. Your international credit is fulfilled. You would need to take three classes in either physical or biological sciences. And your credits of social science are complete.

My suggestion for what tests to take.. a science and a humanities, since those are what you are farthest from fulfilling. For science theres CLEP tests in...
Biology or Chemistry.

For tests fulfilling the humanities credit, theres ...
American Literature, English Literature yawn, Western Civilization 1, and Western Civilization 2 (In high school this is AP European History).

OR you can always take the freshman composition CLEP so you won't have to take the english requirement at UF, it's up to you.

RChris, what would be your major, because taking clep college algebra seems like a waste of time for most majors. With any science, psych, engineering, business major you should be a able to finish the math requirement by just taking the requirements for that major.

Computer Engineering is my intended major...I will end up taking a lot of math classes and math is one of my strongest subject areas.

So it isn't technically required that one takes college algebra, just that they complete the requirements? Besides, with the AP Calculus I'll be ahead in calculus anyway (if I do well on the AP test)...

I guess as greekyoghurt said, taking the english composition with essay would be a wise choice because that would knock of one of the requirements that would probably not be part of the core curriculum for an engineering major in the area of computers?

Yeah, college algebra and computer information would be a waste of your time. The only people who take it are people who are bad at math or math is not really required for their major. You will have plenty of math classes to fulfilled the requirements as a engineering major. Even if you dont pass ap calc, you can just start with calc 1 when you get here; if you pass, you can take calc 2 for ap students. If you really want to take cleps, I would only recommend cleps that would help with diversity, humanities, social science, and international (some of which you have already because of your aps gov, eco, geo). As a engineering major you will take (ENC3254) professional communication for engineers, so only take a clep that would get rid of enc1101 or just take 1101 when you get here.

It dosen't mean anything. Passing grade on CLEP is a 50 for most of the exams (I think it might be 60 for languages). You have nothing to lose but money and 1 1/2 hours of your time so why not give it a shot?
