CLEP tests for college credits?

I have read that students can take CLEP tests to get credit (for stuff you already know) for various classes in college. Does anyone know which of the four offered English CLEP tests, if passed, will give you credit for ENC 1101?
Any other coordinating Gen Ed to CLEP tests????

Don't know about eng, but my S took the CLEP for college algebra, which he believed would be the only math requirement he'd have for his major. As he'd already had honors calc (not AP) in High School, he couldn't see sitting through that class. He said it was amazingly easy, and he received the credit with no problem. Of course, since then he altered his plans, LOL, and so now he's in calc with one of the worst teachers (bar none) he's ever had in his life. Said 20 members of class went to adminstration one day before class; he hadn't heard about it until after it happened. But he's the second highest grade in the class, and he has a 60 something. We'll see what happens ... sounds as though this guy's a pain in the butt. You can do a two page calc problem and if you transpose a number at the end, you receive no credit. It's all ... or zip on everything.

When did he take the college algebra CLEP??? We are trying to decide if she should do it soon or if she can wait until she is done with school in late May. My daughter may try the college algebra one too since she currently has an A in her high school Honors Calculus class.

Thanks for the replies!

He took the college algebra CLEP in May of his senior year, I believe. And he said it was seriously easy.

Ok, so my daughter gave the English comp CLEP a try on May 22nd. This is the only CLEP test that dosen't give you your score right away (since there is an essay to be graded and read). The website says that the scores will be available in 2-3 weeks. It will be 3 weeks on Thursday. Where do we go on the UCF website to see if she passed (and got the credit for it)? Will it show up next to her AP score on the Application status page?

follow-up: She passed the English Comp with Essay CLEP (that she took on May 22nd) and got the score report in the mail on Tuesday June 17th. The school should have received it the same day. It still does not show up on her myUCF website.

I haven't seen it, but is there anyway you can CLEP English 2?

Took AP Lang and AP Lit (passed both) and didn't know until class scheduling that passing both exams gets you out of ENC 1101... so now I'm stuck in ENC 1102

It depends on what your score was on them. Check out the credit chart for the APs;

If you got 3s...well that is passing but barely. Out of state privates would not even have given you credit at all.

If you got 4's or 5's on AP Eng Lang., then you get out of ENC 1101 AND 1102.
If you got a 4 or 5 on AP Eng. Lit, then you also get out of LIT 1005.
So it is NOT for nothing.

Lit 1005 is... nothing.

3 on Lang because as a junior, we weren't aware that 3 means cloes to nothing. We thank our school for forgetting to tell us these things about AP classes...

Probably a 4 or 5 on Lit, but yet again... LIT 1005 is a useless credit.

Which is why I was going to try to CLEP it. I was a creative writing major and have 17 credits of h.s. English/writing under my belt. I have no desire for a repeat.

Be sure to check in the course catalog whether the class exists. Sometimes it says that you can receive credits for a certain course by taking the CLEP, but the class isn't actually offered at UCF. Example: Marketing CLEP

D reviewed the CLEP tests that are being offered and is comfortable taking College Math. Will UCF recognize it as credit if she passes? Is anyone familiar with College Math CLEP and can comment? Thanks

Jerseyshoremom- if she takes college mathematics and passes, she will get 3 credits for MGF 1106/finite math. This would definitely count toward her summer requirement (she would done after this summer’s 6 credits) however you daughter must take MAC 1105/college algebra for her major. She will still have to take that class PLUS either statistics OR Comp. for Business FOR HER MAJOR.

JerseyShoreMom: after taking Seiclan’s advice on this thread, my daughter took English Composition CLEP and College Algebra CLEP and passed both tests easily. Now she won’t have to take ENC 1101 or MAC1105 (I think those are the correct #'s). She is a Hosp/Manag major. We are also from NJ. She took the tests in NJ and had the scores sent to UCF. It took about 3 weeks or so and they did show up on her MY UCF after she took the tests. It was definitly worth taking them and getting these out of the way.

So I should push her to take College Algebra? She looked at the practice tests and felt more confident in College Math, but with a little practice and another month of school, she can take the Algebra test mid-May, she may excel.

I’m getting the feeling if she passes College Math CLEP she will still have to take algebra and statistics or comp for business in college?

You have the correct feeling. The college math CLEP will give her 3 credits but she will still need to take algebra (and stats or comp for business). I really think she should try to take the college algebra. If she dosen’t pass it (she will know that day) she could always try the college math then.

Okay…I think I understand this, but am still a little foggy…D took AP Eng. Lang. as a junior and got a 3 on the exam. According to the website it looks like this gets her out of Eng. 101, so she does not have to take the CLEP for this subject? The Eng. Lang. with Composition CLEP only gets them out of Eng. 101, but not 102 if they pass? Or is it up to the scoring?

alongwait - you are correct. At UCF, a score of 3 on the AP Lang test gets your daughter out of ENC 1101. The CLEP is for kids who either did not pass the AP (got a 1 or 2 on the exam) or did not take AP English in high school and want to see if they can get out of ENC 1101 (the GE programs communications 1 requirement). With a 50 or above on the English Composition with Essay CLEP, a student gets credit for ENC 1101 (just like the kids who passed AP Lang).

Thanks Seiclan! Well, that is good news over here!
