I am from California and I was wondering if I attend UT of A, if it will be clique since dont most Texans go there?

Are you referring to UT in Austin or UT at Arlington? Sorry just slightly confused, and if you don’t mind me asking what exactly do you mean by clique?

He’s probably wondering if groups of friends are already formed from high school. Yes and no. There will be plenty of meeting during the first week so just go be social You’ll be fine meeting people oos and instate

Life is full of cliques: people of similar sensibilties who gather by interest and background. Should not be a problem to find friends with similar interests to yours amoung the HUGE student population. Form your own clique! :)

As people mentioned, people will gather and clump according to interests and the like. In that way, there are cliques. However, will no one let in to your group because they’re mean? No. Yes, a lot of times groups are defined by race or culture. Greeks tend to be a tad bit insular. But there’s a lot of overlap and you can be and hang out with whomever you want.

Since you’re out of state, really try to integrate as well as you can into UT whenever you have a chance. Orientation and the first few weeks of school are the times to really put yourself out there and get to know everybody. A lot of people will still be in their high school groups, but if you’re social, you’ll find friends.

Also, I don’t know if this is your thing or not, but, of course, the Greek system is another way to find friends and really get to have a core group to do anything and everything together.

If you’ve been able to make friends easily in the past, you shouldn’t have trouble at UT.

If you are concerned about making friends, be sure to attend Camp Texas. It is sponsored by the TexasExes and is a great opportunity to form new connections. https://www.texasexes.org/camptexas/

There are LOTS of student organizations to choose from: [University of Texas at Austin - Office of the Dean of Students - Student Activities and Leadership Development - Student Organizations](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/sald/studentorgs/)

You can also join an Intramural Sports Team:[UT RecSports - Intramurals - Home - About](http://www.utrecsports.org/intramurals/about.php)

Also, UT Austin is just “UT”. UT-A refers to UT Arlington. :-)

oh im a girl and thanks for the help. especially the whole ut instead of ut-a.

My son is an OOS freshman. He really enjoyed Camp Texas and made several friends there. The first week on campus, he told me, “Mom, everyone is so friendly here! Kids actually come up and talk to me!” LOL, the northeast isn’t quite as warm and welcoming, as a rule.

He also found the FIG (Freshman Interest Group) class helpful his first semester, so you might want to check that out.

if this helps, I’m from Texas and though lots of people from hs are going, I’d rather branch out and start over once I get to UT. I really want to meet new people and make new friends, cause that’s what college is for! Just be extra social during orientation and stuff and you’ll meet lots of other students. (easier said then done, I know. I get really shy so I’ll probably have trouble with this!) Good luck!

You’ll do fine, lorrainedelis! I was very shy, too, but I found it easy to make friends. A girl I met the first day I moved into my dorm is still one of my closest friends. Another girl in my calculus class noticed me, since we lived in the same dorm. She followed me, introduced herself, and we also became good friends. College is great!
