Hello Everyone,

Can someone give me an idea of how much closet/shelf space there is in a freshman dorm?
Do the dorms vary in size and what is the average size of a freshman dorm?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Everyone,

Can someone give me an idea of how much closet/shelf space there is in a freshman dorm?
Do the dorms vary in size and what is the average size of a freshman dorm?

Thanks for your help.

Most freshman dorms are around 180 (low range) to high 220’s (high range) sq.ft. Most are around 200ish sq.ft. Perkins, Em-Wool/Mo-Champ (and maybe others if I’m forgetting) have built in wardrobes, while others have closets. Keeney has a pretty generous walk-in closet, and from what I’ve noticed, Andrews rooms have one big closet and one smaller closet.

I would guess the dorms vary pretty much in size. You can go to the Residential Life page in the Brown web site and click your way through various dorms.

Doesn’t give much info about size, though. My daughter lived in New Pembroke her first year and the room was a decent size. The closets were pretty small, though. Also, the dorms tend to seem old and somewhat dilapidated. That can be off-putting. But that also is pretty normal, I think. It’s hard to judge how much to bring. It’s better to underestimate and get whatever you need after you arrive. Thayer Street has some clothes shopping and Providence Place Mall is within walking distance (although it’s down the hill). You can always get whatever you need.

Just want to elaborate on what Lapras said:

Perkins, EmWool, and MoChamp’s “built in wardrobes” are actually physical wardrobes, so they take up space in your room. They’re probably about six feet tall and have a hanger bar and a shelf up top.

Thank you so much for your input. I needed to get an idea of how much space we will be working with.

Just to be clear (not everyone seems aware of this, so it’s worth mentioning here), those are the sizes of doubles, as freshmen are placed into doubles. I had the smaller closet in an Andrews double my first year, and I’d guess my closet was about 6 square feet. Pretty small, but with a safe (few buildings come with safes, apparently, but Andrews does).

Keeney also comes with safes in the closets, and yeah, as mentioned above, they are really very spacious

Perkins comes with safes in the closet/build-in wardrobe. It really is quite roomy with room for hanging clothes or a hanging shelf (those that hook over the top of the bar). And the shelf on the top has lots of room.

Rooms assigned to freshmen typically have safes in their closets. Rooms assigned to upperclassmen do not.

Dorms with big closets: Andrews (sometimes), Wayland, Littlefield, Keeney (to an extent). There are always anomalies, though.

If you live in Wayland or Littlefield, you will have to pack up some of your stuff during winter break because athletes staying for training will be housed in your room. For these reasons, the closets are large and also lock.

Some dorms come with pre-lofted beds, which offer a lot of storage space. Otherwise, get some bedrisers. They’re pretty cheap, and they can greatly increase the storage capabilities of your room.

^EmWool freshmen rooms apparently do not have safes. I had told an incoming freshman that freshmen rooms have safes, and it turned out that her dorm didn’t. There are other such freshmen dorms, but which ones currently escape me.
