Clothing at CMU?

I'm gonna be a freshman at CMU this fall, and, being a fashion-concious girl, I was wondering what type of clothing is worn at CMU. Are there any trends? Any popular types of shoes or accessories? Any info would be helpful since I haven't visited the campus since last year and honestly don't remember fashion on campus (or lack thereof).

I wore gym shorts and a t-shirt. Normally sandals, even in the winter.

My son wears polos and jeans with sweatshirt jackets and warmer jackets in January. It’s pretty cold there in January. I’m surprised that someone could wear sandals!

If you are fashion conscious, have a look at Shadyside and South Side when you get to campus - South Side has Steve Madden/HM/Forever21/Aerie/American Eagle, and Shadyside has American Apparel/Victoria’s/Sephora/J Crew.

Most fashionable girls on campus wear peacoats in the winter, sometimes doubled-up tights under a cute dress, and sometimes a real snow jacket when it gets REALLY cold. Uggs are definitely a faux pas for some reason, as are earmuffs. Those are really the only trends I’ve noticed. In the warmer months, anything goes. Gladiator sandals were big this year.

On a related note, do people (girls in particular) use backpacks, or is that not really necessary? I used a Jansport backpack in high school, but it has a lot of holes in it, so I was thinking of either springing for a Northface backpack if people use backpacks/they’re necessary, but otherwise I was thinking of just looking for a new tote bag or something like that.

Thanks guys! This was helpful.

Sounds like I’ll be heading over to Shadyside within my first month at CMU!

Uggs faux pas–ahh I love my pairs! What boots are usually worn instead? mukluks?

CaliforniaDancer - I’m planning to carry a cute black tote from class to class so if you decide to do that you won’t be the only one! I am wondering about what girls usually carry to class, whether it’s the typical northface back pack or a more trendy tote…?

Plenty of girls wear backpacks, especially in CIT/MCS it seems-- those girls have to haul textbooks. We humanities/arts girls tend to carry purses or totes. I’ve got a leather messenger bag and a black tote that I trade off with depending on the weather.

As for boots - leather boots are in, as are knee highs, slouchy boots and ankle boots. You might want to get a durable pair of really thick-material ones and spray them with waterproofer so that they’re fit for the snow!

Wear a cape.

^ Or just copy this guy’s look and you’ll fit right in.

is there a target or old navy near by?

There is an old navy in Fox Chapel, where my boyfriend lives, and one by Robinson Township. You used to be able to reach Robinson by taking the 28x bus directly there, but it doesn’t stop there anymore, so I don’t know how you would get there now ):

As for Target, there are a couple again in Fox Chapel and one in Monroeville which is more or less Squirrel Hill. There is also one down by the Waterfront I think. You can take one of the CMU buses on Sundays to the Target at the Waterfront, but the other two are a little more out of the way.

Monroeville ftw! just sayin. Monroeville has Old Navy in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center and Target two blocks away. Monroeville is about 20-25 minutes away from CMU and we also have the Monroeville Mall which is a great place to buy clothes. (Waterfront is overpriced)

Wear a cape.

Will do! ;)

@steelers: what bus can you take to get to monroeville? All the ones I’ve seen turn before you get to the Target area.

I remember both a Target and Old Navy at the Waterfront.

@Kate I live in monroeville so I don’t know much about buses.

@floriah I heard about some cape protest at cmu last year. I was bored so I brought it up.

@Kate or bosssr do students bring locks for laptops?

I haven’t seen anyone use a laptop lock.
