Ok, so I'm from a pretty cold area and I was wondering what types of clothing I should bring to Duke. Will I be wearing jeans and a tshirt most of the year, or will it be the usual sweaters and big winter jackets during December?? Is there a lot of rain down there?

I actually hardly ever used my winter clothing (e.g. sweaters, long-sleeved shirts). As long as I had a jacket for when I was outside, I was fine.

And yeah, the rainstorms can get really bad. Bring a sturdy umbrella and/or one that would be small enough to fit in your bag.

I'm from the NE, and personally, I wear almost everything I wear at home while at Duke (maybe never the heavier sweaters & I can probably count the times on two hands where I wore my down jacket during the daytime last year) -- but lots of people do wear longsleeved shirts and sweaters and fleeces (normally I just use a heavy fleece as a winter coat when I'm just going between my dorm, the BC and class).

i'm fomr philly and i found that i mostly wore jeans, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. sometimes more was needed, sometimes less. if you are planing on spending any time at all in kville...bring heavier clothing. i mean it. it gets cold and it's not easy to hold a can of busch if you're shivering. a winter jacket will serve you well in kville.

Is it necessary to have a nice outfit for convocation? How often will we need to have a dressy casual outfit?

bandcampgirl: Do you know if people dress up for shabbat sevices at FCJL? What about the high holy days? Do I need a suit or will a skirt and top be fine?

I am originally from Buffalo and now live about 2 hrs from Duke. I have been here two years and have yet to wear my winter coat. My kids 15 and 13 wear hoodies/jeans in the winter. If im not mistaken, they wear shorts until around mid Oct. I remember the first year down here, the kids were out in their shorts on Halloween.

When it rains, yes you should make sure u have good rain gear.

FCJL...ok...i'll handle this one (for guys...sorry girls).
Shabbat: if you're going to services, nicer pants and a button down shirt are fine. if you're just going for food, maybe thrown on a polo or something.
Rosh Hashana/Yom Kippur: I wore a sports coat last year. if i had a suit at school i would've worn it.

In general, on the high holidays the FCJL is like a synagoge. otherwise, it's like going on a dinner date. if you're going durring the week for dinner, just dress as if you were going to the marketplace.

i wore a casual sundress because it was hot and the first thing i unpacked. most people that i remember my year didn't dress up -- granted, i wouldn't go in an old tshirt and grimy sneakers or anything, but no need to do a sports coat.

I can't remember ever really having to dress up first semester. Still, it's good to have some nice pants and shirts and perhaps some ties and a jacket in your closet so that you're prepared. I also seem to remember calling home and asking my parents to ship me a sports coat from my closet because I forgot to bring it to school. I can't remember if that was the end of first semester or the beginning of second semeseter, though.

Heh, that makes me glad once again that my family has moved to a town 30 minutes from Duke.

Heh... well, last year, we actually experienced a drought during first semester. It hardly ever rained. So, I can't really tell you what this semester will be like. It does seem, though, that when it rains, it rains pretty much the most during the morning/early afternoon.

And when it rains the drainage around campus is very poor. My D actually had to buy some rain boots this year after dragging several pairs of jeans through tiny rivers created on the sidewalks after a rainstorm or two. Guys would probably rather just get wet, but many girls do own cute rainboots for those torrential storm days that appear from time to time. A large umbrella is also nice to have; the smaller ones don't seem to do the trick lots of times.

My freshman year we had NASTY rainstorms-- especially fall semester. last year wasn't nearly as bad in the fall, but the spring definitely had its moments. it's not like it constantly rains or anything, but when it rains it pours (lol) and rain gear is like the weather gear worth investing in at duke.

DukeRose - I think my friends who went to the services usually just wore a skirt and a nice t-shirt, nothing all that fancy. High Holidays services were pretty much what you'd wear to a normal synagogue - skirt and a blouse, or something like that. Skirt and top will be absolutely fine. For the shabbat dinners (minus the services), people just went as they would to the marketplace - jeans and a t-shirt, or whatever your equivalent is.
