Can I wear a motorcycle jacket not like a $600 one but a simple plain brown leather jacket ( like the one in john wick when he goes to the garage to check in on his car) with black pants at schools with casual dress code, I really like it. Like berkshire, millbrook.
I go to Berkshire and I would say for class, probably not but I would have to look at the handbook. I’ll link it right here: http://www.berkshireschool.org/page.cfm?
If the link doesn’t work just go on the school website, go to student life, and then in the sidebar click “Student Handbook”.
It was just announced though, that they were going to try and make the dress code more casual and give boys and girls he opportunities to wear what they want, so next year there probably won’t be gender restrictions(i.e. girls can wear pant suit)
At most schools you can wear whatever jacket you want outdoors. Most schools, except those with really relaxed dress codes, would frown on outerwear being worn in the classroom.
Regardless, this type of question is best asked once one actually has an offer of admission from a particular school.
At Phillips Exeter, even though it technically has a dress code, it really depends on the teacher of whether or not they enforce it… one of my friends has been wearing different black leather jackets since the beg of school so you should be fine here
It’s really different for every school. At some schools you can wear denim, at others it has to be colored denim, but that’s just an example. If you go on to the schools website, most will have the student handbook posted which with give info on dress code requirements, so that’s always a good way to find out more.
For schools that have a moderate dress code, like Middlesex, do boys wear flannel shirts (collared) and fleece or are they expected to be more formal? What about pants? My son has never been able to tolerate jeans or anything that isn’t soft so any suggestions?
@HMom16 My son also refuses jeans due to the material. We have found that khakis are ok. He tends to find them more comfortable with a slightly larger waist (aka 30, instead of 28) and a belt. You may need to go through the torture of trying different brands and styles. Similarly, with collared shirts, look for brands that stamp on the information rather than having tags. Different brands have softer materials and softer collars.
Good luck!
Haha! @HMom16 I have been in a tizzy looking for soft stretchy khakis for about a week! We should create a post just for that issue. I told him he needs pajama jeans;).
My son is also anti-jeans – all athletic shorts and soccer pants for the past few years. He likes the J Crew lightweight khakis, and they fit him well; I’ve already bought a couple of pairs on sale for him to grow into. J Crew also has shirts in some kind of “special wash” fabric that look nice and seem to be comfortable.
This is going to be a challenge. There’s no way my son will wear cords. I saw some climbing pants and some “performance” pants that look like khakis online but who knows what they’re like in person. The other issue is that he’s 6’2" but with a boy’s build.
Honestly, they’ll get used to it. A lot of students start to take pride in how they dress. It’s part of the culture to look nice. But, I’m biased. I personally really dislike the athletic pants thing that is common. Sometimes, a little peer pressure can bring about welcomed changes.
I highly recommend giving Bonobos a try. Plenty of different fits and styles including slim cut which is good for tall, thin guys. They make a line with stretch for extra comfort. https://bonobos.com
Ah…good luck w those 28-34s or whatever! HAHAHAHAHA
Online it is!
For a sports jacket, my tall but boy-narrow kid ended up with a size 18 kids from Nordstrom. They were able to let out the sleeves. We just had to move him to a 20. He is starting to broaden so next fall may be easier, though more expensive.
My son ended up with a 42R suit jacket but we tried on dozens before we found one that had a slim cut as well as appropriate sleeve length. Thanks for the Bonobos recommendation, there is a Guideshop near us.
He may become more “style aware” after revisits. It was 30 deg this morning and he went to school wearing shorts, a t-shirt and a lightweight sweatshirt.
For those kids who hate jeans or twill or khakis, my son has found the surf brands (billabong, ONeiil, Volcom, Oakley, etc) all make hybrid dress shorts that are super comfortabl, and some of those brands make pants, too. The fabric is lightweight with a little stretch, no iron and looks nice. He’s had a dress code since 1st grade that disallowed athletic gear, requiring collared shirts & business casual pants. We found these and now he will not wear anything else. It’ll make their laundry easier, too, because they don’t wrinkle!
Abercrombie was grear for soft khakis when we needed those 28-34 sizes but we had to get them online. They were never in the store. Banana Republic has some good slim tall options as well.
Any ideas for girls? My daughter wears colored “jeans”, but I do not think those are allowed, correct? What are the pant options that are comfortable for girls?
