I don't think that the goverment would be able to completly eliminate poverty.

Comments: While many people make bad choices that lead to poverty (drug use, etc.) I think overall most people are doing all they can but even working 2-3 jobs it's very close to impossible to support a family on minimum wage (5.15 here), and they end up getting in debt and with a bad education it's almost impossible to get a better job. I don't really think government aid helps much, there are always the people who use it badly, and it's usually given unfairly. Minimum wage should definitly be higher though.

Hope that helped :)

Quick explanation:
a_ drug abuse is a Major problem, because not only are kids wasting money, themselves on drugs, but they also are working just to get money for drugs, not worrying about supporting themselves healthily or anyone dependent on them. Some drug abusers will sell their flipping MOTHERS for the drugs. I think this is a serious problem.

b_I know medical bills do contribute to some family's poor status, however, you CAN get support for medical bills, and also, most families who are poor aren't using the money on medical bills anyway, but rather for food and water for survival, so minor cause.

c_Many jobs are part-time, this is not the problem. Many rich people today had to work from their way up, and that's usually the case for well-off people. If people can budget their resources and money responsibly, there IS hope to get out of a poverty situation. I know it's hard and long, and a very tough journey, but it can be done. And I'm living proof, my parents were dirt poor when they came here, so minor cause.

d_I think single parent families contribute more of a cause to poverty. I know, many times, that raising a child or children by 1 parent works out okay, but it's still very difficult. It takes 2 parents to make a kid, 2 parents need to support the kid if possible.

e_Shortage of jobs--minor cause. There are many low paying jobs out there, it just depends on how hard-working you are most of the time. You can even find jobs in the middle of the African sahara, much more in the United States. Many low-wage fast food restaurants will take anyone to work.

f_the welfare system helps anyone, if anything, from poverty, this isn't a cause at all. sure it doesn't give all families in need but I don't think a welfare system is the way to go, too many people take advantage.

g_Too many immigrants is one of the minor causes in my opinion, because they provide the competition for those low paying jobs and stand in the way for a poor person, because now they need a competitive edge just to get a job and money to get food on the table.

h_I think this is a major cause, if one poor person from a bad neighborhood can make a difference in his and his family's life, so can many others. But they see themselves as having it bad as it is, and that there is no "hope". Most go to drugs and other things leading to poverty. They see others that go to the same route, and just follow. Few have the dream to help themselves. That's why these poor neighborhoods keep growing.

i_no cause in my opinion, a rich person can have no moral values, but hey, is he suffering from poverty?

j_minor cause, i know they don't help as much with motivational issues, etc but my school is pretty bad and several kids still come out of it alright, with enough money to sustain them. I think other causes contribute more to the poverty.

I think it is not as clear cut as one or the other. Sure there are some people that belong to category B, but there are many that are a combination of both or just A. But in most developed nations I'd say the majority are A, while in less developed countries it is definitely B.

No, I don't think what we consider poverty will ever be eliminated nor could the government accomplish it simply through spending money. As we see they aren't that efficient.

No way. I don't trust the government to do it. In my country we already pay in excess of 50% of our income and it isn't doing anything.

comments? I pay enough in taxes, but would like the minimum wage to be raised despite the repercussions. A worker should earn enough for food and rent. $10 minimum at todays price levels seems closer to fair.

The life of a poor person in the US is a luxurious life for people in many countries. As matter of fact, I myself wouldn't mind being poor. Easy college acceptance, great welfare

I'm not sure I understand the question. Would the government be able to eliminate the condition of poverty in the US by bettering its schools, actually trying to help its poorest citizens rather than just throw money at them through welfare, actually show some compassion, etc.? Yes. Would they ever do it? I personally find it unlikely. I think it would be impossible to eradicate poverty across the entire nation, but it could be significantly reduced so it would barely be a part of national life.

In your opinion, which is the greater cause of poverty today - (a.) that people are not doing enough to help themselves out of poverty, or (b.) that circumstances beyond their control cause them to be poor?
Usually, I think circumstances beyond the individuals control cause the individual to make bad decisions about their lifestyle thus throwing them in to poverty. bad parenting, single parenting, oppression, no core values, etc.... can cause a person to lose "faith" (or trust) in themselves and their abilities causing a downward spiral into poverty
