Thanks Johanna, we will try and visit. Do you know if there is an L.A. Regional?

I graduated last spring, so I don't know about the audition sites for this year, but when I was in school, I know they went to LA. I'm sure its listed on the CMU Drama site, www.cmu.edu/cfa/drama. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks again...She's registered Feb.12th at 1pm..L.A. Wow exciting. We will try and see the school at another time . Maybe a show too.

My dd is registered for her CMU auditon in NY 2/2. She is planning to go on and audition at the unifieds the same weekend.
Good luck to all and fracture your choice of leg bones{:-)!

How quickly do you think the audition dates will fill up?

No way to tell

If I wait a week or two do you think I should be fine?

My d is a Soph MT at CMU. She auditioned for them at Unifieds and the audition was approx. 4 hours. Unlike many of the schools that she auditioned for, they brought 6 faculty members---it was quite impressive!! The head of the Acting program made some opening remarks along with other staff members. The auditions took place in four large adjoining conference-type rooms---one for Acting, one for Dance, one for Vocals and the main room for applicants and parents- it was quite the operation. As they completed each audition, the teacher wrote comments on what looked like a large manila envelope - and this went back to the person in the "main room." This envelope followed the applicant from room to room (only the teachers handled the "envelope"- it was obvious to me that they definitely wanted "buy-in" from dance, acting and vocals---thus, the "rotating" envelope.) They took polaroids of all the applicants (none of the other schools did this) and even tho it was a lengthy process--it ran very smoothly!
They were very open about their selectivity--- sharing with us how many they would be accepting in Acting and MT that year---but they said it in a very positive and supportive way. They were so welcoming--out of all of her auditions at Unifieds- I was most impressed with them.
All in all, the audition experience was a positive one and the "actual school"
experience has been even better!!!

In which city did you do the CMU Unifieds? It does sound like an intense experience. Did your D also do other auditions that day?

Hi, MTMama, Last year in Chicago for CMU, there was either a morning or an afternoon assignment, and they told you to hold 4 hours for that audition. It is a block of time that's maybe either 9 to 1 or 1 to 5 (that block may have been 1:30 - 5:30, I don't remember, as my son had the morning shift). During the block of time, I wouldn't think it is wise to schedule another school. You could do another school in the other part of that day. I think they had an info session first, followed by dance, followed by the kids doing individual auditions for acting and voice in different rooms at different times. I remember some sitting around waiting.

MTMama:
My d auditioned at the Chicago Unifieds and it was intense. She had blocked out the entire Monday morning for CMU (beginning at 9:00 a.m.), but it ran long. She knew she had a problem when her CCM audition was scheduled to begin at 1:00, but she hadn't yet done the dance portion of the CMU audition. The CMU faculty was very gracious and told her to go to the CCM audition. Judy Conte (dance professor in attendance) told her she could complete the CMU dance audition at any session during the next two days.

My d did 9 auditions (three per day) at Unifieds, and like Showbizkidz, I was most impressed with the organizational process, faculty members in attendance, and genuine caring shown at the CMU audition.

Thanks for the scoop. Am wondering if CMU brings as many faculty to its L.A. auditions as it does to Chicago? I know that some schools bring fewer people the further they have to travel. And does anyone know if the audition is run any differently in L.A. ?

My d went to Chicago for Unifieds---several people suggested that this would be the best place to go for Unifieds. Looking back, I don't know why we traveled so far since the same schools were at closer locations- we're from Seattle, and she certainly could have gone to L.A.
She had six scheduled auditions, but because of poor planning on our part--she only could fit in four---CCM and UMICH were inflexible about changing times. (she tried unsuccessfully before we left- so she went with the audition times even tho it conflicted with other schools- when she got there, she had to pick and choose which ones to go to--I wouldn't suggest doiing this- ha!) So, she only ended up auditioning for Emerson, BOCO, NYU, and CMU.
She did not do any on-campus auditions----she was content just doing the auditions all in one location. I personally liked the idea of back to back auditioning all day ( you really get " on a roll") versus the on-campus audition and it certainly was easier on the pocketbook! We didn't tour any campuses because she wanted to see if she even got accepted before she toured the school (obviously, this doesn't work for everybody !)

As you know the Chicago Unifieds take place in February and we felt it might be smarter to be seen while they were winding down their unified college tours. No scientific reason for this- ha!- just thought maybe they'd remember you a little better. For example, the year my D auditioned for CMU, they saw approx. 600 girls and 600-700 boys. BOCO saw approx. 570 kids. Since the numbers are so huge, we felt it might be better to be seen towards the "end" of the audition run---again, nothing scientific--just a strategy (?) we thought might be more advantageous. It's hard to figure all this out and come up with any answers....

KenMarksnj- I am auditioning on November the 12th as well in Pittsburgh. Did you sign up for a morning or afternoon time?... See you there and good luck!

Texas

I know CMU's Web site provides a list of nearby hotels and motels. But has anyone any personal experience in staying at any of them? I am taking my D for a visit in a few months and need to book a place (preferably one with a shuttle to campus so we don't have to worry about using our car a lot) asap. Naturally, price is important, as this is not the only school we are visiting. It just needs to be clean and decent and offer non smoking rooms. Thanks!

Lisa,

I took my D to CMU for the Feb. audition. We flew to Penn State for their audition, had rented a car, drove to CMU and then the next day was the CMU audition and then flew home (well, we never did fly home, long story about the CMU audition, not boarding the plane and having to spend a night at a hotel by the airport). Anyway, for the night before the audition that I had arranged in advance (as opposed to the next night by the airport, lol), we stayed at Shadyside Inn. It was $125/night and it unbelievably was a two bedroom condo type of unit...living room, kitchen, etc. It was on Fifth Ave. in Shadyside. While one may be able to walk to campus (long walk), I had the rental car and parking was no problem at CMU's garage. But in walking distance to Shadyside Inn are lots of restaurants and shops on this one main street about three blocks from the inn. There is a popular breaksfast spot called Pamela's, if I recall, in walking distance. Parking at the inn was also no problem, no extra cost. I thought this rate was pretty good, particularly for what we got. They even provided a boxed breakfast...bagels, etc.

I hope this is a helpful start.
Susan

Thanks a bunch, Soozievt! Shadyside was on the CMU list. I am going to go ahead and call them. Love to hear about your D's audition sometime, if you care to share. :)

NMR,

We stayed at the Hampton Inn which was 1 mile from CMU. Clean and everyone was very nice! They do have a free shuttle which goes to CMU which we made use of! Took it to Station Square which is a wonderful area with some nice restaurants (Hard Rock Cafe...things like that). I do have to agree with Soozie that Shadyside is a great area too. The shops were just wonderful and we did Pamela's twice for breakfast....awesome!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself. I will be auditioning for MT on November 12 at Pittsburgh. Anyone else? I'm extremely excited! Bye.
