[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: Taiwan most definetely, I got a letter from the Associate Dean mentioning it and asking about physics.
[] Other thoughts: I've never taken physics, a prerequisite for CIT.

Friday, March 24, semi-fat letter reached my offspring in California, with a no for SCS, the waitlist for ECE, an acceptance to join "information Systems" programs, and admission to various CIT majors that my offspring did not apply to. It's kind of like applying to veterinary school and getting a letter offering you a place in dental school instead. Has anyone else had this happen? I think the "Official Fat Letter" written on the outside of the envelope is not quite truth in advertising in this case. It would have been better to leave the outside of the envelope blank until the awful truth sunk in.

Included in my letter is the invitation to participate in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Mellon College of Science (I applied to MCS only). Do they extend this offer for all admitted students to MCS? Along with this paragraph in the acceptance letter, there is a separate paper titled "The Science and Humanities Scholars Program", which explains the different aspects about the program aforementioned in the letter (I'm assuming--this language is kind of vague). And on the very bottom, there is a tear-off slip that I should fill out if I'm interested in this program. Is everyone extended this offer or is it just a ploy to get admittees to matriculate? By the way, the first few lines of this paper reads: "Congratulations on your admission to Carnegie Mellon. From your application you have demonstrated exceptional ability in a wide variety of academic areas."

But like I said, I can't tell whether this actually means anything or not. If anyone knows, any explanation would be most appreciated! By filling out the little slip, does that mean I'm automatically placed in the program? What is this "Science and Humanities Scholars Program" like, anyway? Any insight on this would be great, and I hope I'm not seeming like an idiot for not knowing this!

The offer is extended to only top students. It is not a "trick" at all. The program is basically allowing you priority in choosing between any courses in MCS and HSS.

Oceanview: "It's kind of like applying to veterinary school and getting a letter offering you a place in dental school instead. "'
That is not true. :) When you are accepted into other schools, you are allowed to transfer into whatever school you are interested in (though SCS is getting heavily demanded and it depends on space) along with the option to freely double major in whatever major you want.

To KRabble, don't know about Humanities Scholars Program. However, it appears that you cannot move among majors at CMU, as stated in the admission letter "For planning purposes, you should not enroll in one department with the hope of transferring into the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Because of space limitations, it may be unlikely that you will be able to transfer into Electrical and Computer Engineering. . . Unfortunately we are unable to offer you a place in the School of Computer Science."

By the way, oceanview, it's not like applying to vet school and getting into dental school beacuse if you appled for ECE than you applied for CIT as ECE is a major in CIT. That is assuming that you did apply for ECE.
