CMU 2018 Transfer

@choser i agree with everything you just said.

@choser i agree with everything you just said.

Does anyone know when we can expect to hear back for transfers for Fall 2018? Freshman have already heard back.

Is the admissions portal still inaccessible for others on here? I haven’t been able to successfully log on for over a month now.

Works perfectly for me.

Around how many transfer applicants are accepted?

So I just got my rejection to Tepper. I wish I could say that I am surprised. I am not sure why exactly I was rejeceted, but I’d guess that it was due to one of these reasons:

  1. Toefl sub-score on the essay portion was only 23.
  2. I had a high-school suspension for alcohol on campus (4 years ago).
  3. I only had a GED.

Besides that I had a 4.0 in CC with 62 credits and a lot of experience relating to my major. I will ask them to share the reason for my rejection. I am not going to appeal etc… I just want to know the cause, so that I can address the issue before other colleges review my application.

@Nomad413 Most colleges have a “common data set” which has records and stats of admitted applicants. For CMU, here is the link of previous year’s admissions stats (including transfer admissions) : https://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/cds_1718.html

Found out the admissions portal doesn’t work with Microsoft edge. In any case, still awaiting response from Tepper… not incredibly optimistic but we will see.

Got rejected from the School of Computer Science! Applying to CMU was a frustrating process haha they didn’t even send out an email saying decisions were out! Their website says May 15th for decisions so that’s kinda weird.

@samc24 Dang that’s sad to hear. What were your statistics btw?

Anyone heard back from CMU?

@rubberducky123 SCS results usually come out in early to mid may based on previous years. The other schools should be coming out rather soon though.

@choser I share your frustration. I, too, have a 4.0 GPA across 60 credits, did the whole honors program thing, did the best I possibly could, and still got get rejected from CMU and Cornell. The sad thing is that I took three courses AT Carnegie Mellon (got a 4.0 there, too) and had recommendations from their own professors! I’m still waiting on Vanderbilt but I bet I got rejected from there, too.

I think that it definitely is very political. You have to be a veteran with a great story, a URM, or from an already great school with great high school stats to get in.

It’s weird because I keep reading that schools want to be “more welcoming of low-income, community college students,” but I actually don’t see this in practice at all. If you look at Cornell, 80% of their students come from 4-year schools. Much of the remaining 20% are guaranteed transfers.

I will be attending my local state school this fall on a full ride. I am disappointed, but also immensely grateful to attend any college at all. I figure – if you have the discipline to get good grades in CC, you will do fine no matter where you go. Thus, I don’t think those who didn’t get our second chances are necessarily screwed; we’ll just have to find other ways to success.

@grahamcracker123 Sorry to hear that man :frowning: you got your decisions back extremely fast - I am still waiting to hear back from everywhere. I am fine with attending state college as well if things do not work out. I also got, essentially, a full ride so I really can not loose either way, which is what I worked for I guess. Best of luck on future endeavors!

@grahamcracker123 The sad truth is that they simply don’t care about CC students. They only care if the student has already done something incredible, such as create a business that makes a few million. I too have a 4.0 over 62 credits, a unique life-story, three recommendations and made six figures from my investments last year, yet I was rejected. 2-5 open spots simply aren’t enough for hundreds of applicants. The most trivial thing can get you disqualified. Specifically for business, this applies to Cornell, UPenn, NYU and Carnegie. Unfortunately, there are a lot of schools that are almost as competitive. Transfers really only have a handful of prestigious schools to choose from that are welcoming to transfer students.

I believe another issue is that some CC’s are very grade inflated, which discredits CC students as a whole. Additionally, there are students that choose the easiest classes and teachers, which makes them look good. I know many people that took the same classes that I chose and got the same grades as me, yet had no idea of the material.

Anyone got accepted so far?

Still no response on my end. Their admissions team must be awfully diligent for requiring close to 3 months to review transfer applications (2/15 application due date and potentially 5/15 admission decision?). GLTA still waiting!
