Hi! I’m a current freshman at UMD who just applied to transfer to Tepper. Can anyone give me an idea of my chances of being accepted? Here are my stats:
High school GPA: 3.72
SAT: 2260 (CR 760, Math 740, Writing 760)
ACT: 34
SAT II: Math II 740, Chinese 760, Lit 790
AP tests: Lang 5, Chinese 5, Art History 4, 2D Studio Design 4, Statistics 4, Calculus AB 4
College GPA: 3.4 (not great, I know)
Extracurriculars: in the Honors College and business school, American Marketing Association, photographer for food website, Creative Ad Director for SUSA (business club), Business Leadership in Society Member
Recs: One is very individualized and personal, one is more generic (from a teacher I wasn’t very close with)
Common app essay: Was about how I had no idea what I wanted for my future when I first applied to schools but now I have a very clear vision of my goals. I talked about how I discovered a passion for digital art after already applying to colleges and didn’t factor it into my applications at the time, but now I feel really strongly about having a design-oriented education while also remaining in the business industry. I really emphasized my passion for art and my desire to combine business and the arts.
CMU essay: Talked very specifically about the Graphic Media Management track within Tepper as well as the IDeATe program, how CMU is very unique in its combination of different industries and that’s exactly what I’m looking for, how CMU’s goals for their students aligns with my personal goals for myself. Also mentioned their Communications Design minor and my specific interest in it and its unavailability at my current school, as well as other ECs and traditions related to CMU. Elaborated more on the idea of mixing business and art.
Additional info: Mentioned my upcoming paid marketing internship with a cybersecurity company as well as the fact that I won a national Scholastic Art & Writing Award for Digital Art last year
Basically my entire application is about how I am really seeking an education that blends design and business together, and there is nowhere else I can achieve this other than at CMU. I tried to be very specific to CMU (it is the only school I am applying to) and really show how I have grown since high school, both professionally and personally. Sorry for the long post but really hoping to get an idea of if I actually have a chance or not - I know CMU is a very science/technology oriented school and I definitely don’t have a strong science background. Thank you!!
