CMU (BHA) vs. NYU Gallatin

Hey all. I was waitlisted from basically all of my reach schools, so now I'm trying to decide between my next choices -- NYU Gallatin or CMU (BHA program). Hopefully someone else there is sharing this dilemma, and I'm desperate for some wisdom/insight from the CC possy :P

I love NYC -- living in the city and losing the tight-knit campus feeling is actually a PLUS in my mind, so that isn't a factor (in fact, it works against CMU because I'm not so hot on Pittsburgh and the segregation of the arts college and science colleges kind of freaks me out).

I'm pretty set on an arts-centered program, yet I want the freedom to choose other courses that don't really fit into a "Fine Arts" Concentration, hence the decision to apply to two diverse programs (NYU being the more independent of the two). While I love Studio Art, I'm hoping that I can get a solid education in any other academic courses I take, and I also want to be exposed to more media / technological application of Art than just pure Studio "stuff".

Internship opportunities also attract me to NYU. However, Carnegie Mellon has a great arts program AS WELL as a very advanced science department, which is why I'm having such a hard time deciding between the two.

Hopefully that's enough about me ... I REALLY appreciate anyone 1) reading through this entire thing and 2) helping me out in any way possible :P

Well, CMU is actually more flexible than you think about choosing random courses (anything from CS to business, engineering, etc). I would even say CMU is MORE flexible than NYU since you can pick Tepper courses, Engineering courses, CS courses, minicourses from any school, Arch courses, Econ courses, etc. You can do this all without worrying about which college they are in.

Now I know the CMU name and career center will probably get you farther but it seems you really like NYC. Granted Pittsburgh is no NYC but it is not a bad city at all (just 5 min downtown).

I don't know what you mean by "segregation" because I definitely feel no segregationi between schools here as I am double majoring and have taken courses in a wide variety of schools. The only segregated school is those INSANE ppl in Drama/Musical Theatre, etc.

See how they even have their own board? shudders

Anyways, I think it comes down to name+strength of many departments vs location and it is definitely your choice to make.

Good luck wherever you go!
