CMU for the social sciences

im considering CMU but i want to major in intl. relations i know its you can only do it as a second major i'd probably do poli sci with it.....how are these two programs is it worth doing social sciences at CMU? Thoughts?

We investigated CMU. Before I begin, let me note that I don't think that any major there is bad or even mediocre.

However, they are not known for their social science. Frankly, you can and probably should go elsewhere for these areas ( other than for economics). There are a lot of other schools that are both better and cheaper. For example, CMU tuition is higher than that of any ivy that I have seen. Obviously, this assumes that CMU doesn't give you some large scholarship that another comparable schools didn't give you.

If, however, you are majoring in science, drama, art, or computer science and want an additional major or minor in social science, CMU might be an excellent choice. Anyway, that is my two cents on this.

Class of 2006, Commencement Program, lists, 10 BS Political Science grads, in the dept of Social & Decision Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Quite a few list International relations as an additional major from this department and from other departments. There are smaller graduating departments. CMU has a very international student body.

Creative Writing and Psych (Cognitive) are #1 but I wouldn't come here for social sciences like english/history/language, etc.

Economics with an additional in International Relations is a good choice as it is related to Tepper and CMU's international connections would land you some nice jobs.

If you want to do full-on IR I would check on Georgetown/Tufts first but if you are unsure (maybe switching to business) or want to incorporate business into your education then an Econ/IR or Business/IR concentration at Carnegie Mellon would be perfect for you.

As for social sciences overall, CMU hooks you up with jobs and differs greatly from LACs so to reiterate I would not come here for MOST social science majors such as History/English.

Straight IR....I'd try for Tufts myself. I was very impressed with the program, from the language instruction to everything else. Georgetown obviously is good also. Actually to be perfectly honest if I was 100 percent sure I wanted to do IR or poly sci I'd probably look at GWU also - especially if they gave you a good aid package. As accepted said if you do business or econ then CMU could be a great option. I hope to do IR or at least take some language courses (depends on if I try to double major in something else lol) but I'm entering the IS program.
