Is cmu’s much higher tuition than instate VT engineering worth the cost in the long run?
I am a VT engineering graduate. My daughter is a second year student at CMU (engineering). It’s a stretch for us to pay the tuition. Is it worth it? Yes. Absolutely yes. Small classes. No online classes. More opportunties for research, clubs, etc. Biggest reason - more companies hiring graduates at higher salaries. Her summer internship this year is with a nationally known company, paying nearly $30/hour plus other benefits working on cutting-edge technology. Turned down other offers.
Class size at VT depends on if OP was accepted to VT Honors. There are smaller classes in honors. In-state VT cost vs. CMU is a huge difference, with approx. $45,000 a year more to attend CMU. That will end up close to $200K more at the end of four years. Hard to see how that is beneficial in the long run. The average salary out of school between the two should be compared, but salaries for engineering students at VT are not substantially lower than CMU’s average. VT also has great internship opportunities.
VT engineering graduate in our family also. D also accepted to both schools, but hasn’t made up her mind yet, as the OOS costs are much higher.
Great! Well thanks to a generous financial aid package from carnegie mellon, I recently just paid the deposit.
