I plan to major in Finance or Economics. Which university is better for this? Any opinions (or facts :P) is much appreciated!

UVA I think. Although Tepper is a nice business school.

Thanks for your reply but is there any particular reason why?

UVA is the better business school for everything except computational finance. For computational finance CMU is number two in the country. Also, keep in mind that you have to reapply for UVA’s business school during your sophomore year.

Hmm I am aware that I have to apply for McIntire for Finance in UVa. I’m quite confused because certain rankings say that CMU ranks above UVa slightly in terms of the finance majors. Of course there are other factors to consider but currently I’m only looking at the academics. ><

There are few undergraduate rankings for economics (as opposed to business or finance). USNWR’s graduate economics rankings place CMU at # 19 , whereas UVA is ranked # 28. For undergraduate business, USNWR ranks UVA # 6 (tied with 3 other schools) and CMU #9, which is not a significant difference.

I don’t know about business, but I’m pretty confident CMU has a stronger economics program, not least considering that there were 5 Nobel laureates in Economics who were at some point on CMU’s faculty. CMU is probably much stronger also in quantitative areas like operations research or computational finance.

While UVA is an outstanding school, for many reasons, Carnegie Mellon would be your better choice.

Thank you all for your replies, I appreciate it! :D

I have one child at uva and another going to cmu. To me, the two schools are as different as can be. Child going to cmu also decided between the two and picked cmu. I would think that the decision would be based more on the type of location you want, the diversity of the population(uva is 70% in state), the size of the school you are looking for, etc. they are both great schools - you cant go wrong
