Hi,
Wondering if anyone on the CMU forum is either in the CMU School of Music or applying. From what I can see, it is a fine program, surounded by other fine programs. Any insights as to degree of selectivity. Also interested (in particular) as to whether these students receive any significant degree of merit scholarhip (when compared with non-music segments of CFA such as Drama, or the non (fine) arts colleges such as CS, Business, etc. for that matter).

Thanks in advance for any input you may provide ... drd

Amazing program. I would say CMU has arguably the BEST arts programs in the world (just as good as Juilliard and the like).

MT is very very selective. I think their ratio is like a dozen out of hundreds of applicants but I could be wrong. You should check the CMU MT theatre board or the actual website for more information.

The CFA students here are really talented and their talent allows me to see Broadway-caliber shows for dirt cheap :)

AcceptedtoCollegeAlready: Musical Theatre is housed within the School of Drama; the poster was asking about the School of Music - could be interested in Vocal Performance, Composition, or Insturmental Performance...not sure because they didn't specify.

Yes, Musical Theatre is incredibly selective...12 per year out of close to 1000. The College of Fine Arts has several top programs; the School of Drama, for example, is one of the top drama schools, if not the top, in the country. The School of Design is also consistently considered one of the best, and Architecture and Fine Art are also well respected.

The School of Music is a fine program, but it is definitely not in the same league as, for example, Juilliard, Oberlin, Peabody, Manhattan School of Music... But definitely a viable option if you feel the program is a fit for you.

Hi,
Looking from the standpoint of performance (oboe). The two performance instructors have wonderful credentials. C. Dealmeida has a remarkably wonderful
sound (heard her perform at Heinz Hall). The tuitition is somewhat intimidating (but could be somewhat more manageable if merit scholarship were avail.)
