Depends on what schools I get accepted into

Classof2018, Yes, I am being serious; my DS and his friends recently graduated from a California HS. The competitive scores to get in to Berkeley were ridiculously high and these were all in-state kids. You can’t look at the stats and assume that he’s above the average stats, “so he’s in”. We recently found out from dd’s friends at Berkeley that a number of students at Cal may be from local HS’s that have agreements with Berkeley for entry; so, their average stats are included. But down in So Cal HS’s, the scores have to be above the high average range with test scores above the average range. My DS didn’t get in with a 2370 SAT, URM status, and a National merit winner. He did get into USC, Caltech, UCLA and the rest of the UC’s. So, yes 2018, Berkeley is a reach for everyone, and, he will be paying some full fees as an OOS student.

@auntbea When I referred to the OP’s State flagship, I meant HIS state flagship, not Berkeley. Cal is a whole different issue; I personally know many students like yours who didnt get into Cal, even though their stats were much higher. Btw, calm down, you don’t need to get feisty, and don’t think for a second that I think that numbers automatically mean acceptance. If you look at my past comments, I have never told anyone that a college is a target or a safety for them. I just tell them about ways that they can improve their app.
