CMU's bad points

where can i find a list of the places that accept dinextra? I want to know where i can spend the money/credit before i get it.

The trucks... they wouldn't happen to sell "fat sandwiches" would they? The "grease trucks" at Rutgers sell those, and I have a local place that does, and fat sandwiches are like AMAZING.

and I like how you answered the question, lol.
I'm kind of freaked now.
Is no one answering because it's like super secret or something?

When i went to visit CMU no one would give me a straight answer either, or they said they didn't know. I'm starting to wonder if dinextra is worth getting at all, or if it's so amazingly good everyone wants it all to themselves! haha, i'm leaning toward the 1st guess.

I'll say this: You're an idiot if you don't take the 70 bucks (most possible) of dine x. Meal blocks are kind of useless.

You can stash up on gum, drinks, ice cream, snacks, anything with dine-x.

I was planning on taking the $70 dineX, I just wanted to know where i could spend it. Gum, drinks, ice cream, and snacks are great but if I live on that I'll gain way more than the Freshman 15!!

ok who the hell is Freshman 15?

haha, freshman 15 is the standard weight freshmen gain, because of the switch to a meal plan system and drinking a lot.

freshman 15 = the weight in lbs that all people supposedly gain in their first year of college

lol...and i was hoping i would starve in the first year due to the meal plans and shed a few extra pounds in the process!!...

someone please answer my question: where can I spend dineX money?? please list places or give me a link.

http://www.cmu.edu/ntia/dining2.htm
maybe?
i don't know.

thanks :-) Starbucks isn't mentioned but CMU students told me that accepts dineX also, is that true?

I don't think that is true? You mean starbucks coffee because I know of places ON CAMPUS that serve Starbucks coffee :) It is not the original store though.

Anyways I've taken that entire list and expressed my own views on each one.

"Andy's Eatery (University Center, Lower Level)
Specialty wraps, coffee drinks, a large selection of fresh smoothies and a variety of breakfast treats."

------I love the smoothies but better coffee can be found in Wean or under the HSS building place (that serves starbucks coffee). Their wraps are pretty good but I am not a "wrap" guy so I have only gotten it once and I don't even remember how it tastes :(

"Asiana (Newell-Simon Atrium)
Asiana offers Chinese and Pacific Rim entrees and soups, from hot foods to ready-to-go items, serving you whether you're on the move or ready to relax and enjoy a meal in the Newell-Simon Atrium dining area."

---I love this place. They give you a lot of food and I know it's stereotypical but I love putting soy sauce on rice. You can be really really hungry and not finish a meal block here if you get the side (big eat + small eat). I recommend this place if you even remotely like asian food.

"Barista Cafe (University Center, Upper Level)
Coffee brewed from freshly ground beans, tea, juices and breakfast items, including great coffee and espresso specials, are just some of the great food and deals you'll find at Barista Cafe."
----Great coffee. Not much more to say but if it is convenient for you then get your stuff here. I actually don't remember what this place even looks like since I never go here for coffee but... eh...

"East Street Deli (University Center, Upper Level)
Located right next to Barista Cafe, they offer flavored cream cheeses, bagels, fresh soups, Whole Body vegetarian and vegan items and made-to-order deli sandwiches on Breadworks® bread. The East Street Deli also offers ready-to-go sides, sandwiches of the week and a baked potato bar. "

------This place makes some great sandwiches and their specials are awesome. I only consistently get 1-2 things from here because I'm always too scared to try the other stuff. Usually for its just tuna sandwich or chicken salad sandwich.

"Ginger's Deli & Coffee House (Baker Hall, Posner Hall, Purnell Center)
Custom deli sandwiches and salads, soups and hot entrees. Ginger's uses only the best and freshest select deli meats and cheeses, for a classy deli experience."
---My friends like this place but I find its food to just be normal. I guess it is because they have great smoothies and deserts and a GREAT lounge to relax in but other than that I don't find the food that good.

"Grab & Go (University Center, Upper Level)
In the main dining gallery coolers you will find fresh salads, kosher meals, vegetarian meals, sandwiches, bottled beverages, convenience items and nutritious snacks, all ready for purchase and take with you in plastic containers."

---This is why you have Dine X. Good place to blow your DineX at the end of the week. Lots of good stuff I forgot I liked (Yahoo, Gum, etc.)

"Kosher Korner (University Center, Upper Level)
New in 2005, Carnegie Mellon has teamed up with Hillel and the Jewish Association in Aging to provide kosher meals each day as certified by the Vaad Horabanim of Greater Pittsburgh. A variety of entrees, snacks and a complete kosher salad bar are available each day."

---I'm not Jewish. I don't go. 'Nuff said.

"La Prima Espresso (Wean Hall)
Espresso, cappuccino, Italian pastries, focaccia bread, soups and sandwiches are the delights you will find at La Prima."

---My favorite coffee place. Cappuchinos are amazing here and I usually go before classes. Oh and try the chocolate pastry thingy.

"Mainstreet Market Express (Newell-Simon Atrium)
Selection from the Mainstreet Market Express includes coffees, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza and hot entrees."

--Don't remember this place? I should probably check it out sometime.

"Original Hot Dog Shop (University Center, Main Floor)
Freshly cut french fries, hot dogs, hamburgers, hoagies and Philly cheese steaks. The "O" is a hometown favorite, with one of only three locations right here at Carnegie Mellon. "

---It is supposed to be super-greasy and bad for you but so is McDonalds and I'd eat there anyday. The fries are good and the burgers are eh.... I personally would just get chicken tenders here + fries and not much more.

"Pepperazzi (University Center, Upper Level)
Made-to-order fresh-dough pizzas, pasta, bread sticks, meatballs, panini sandwiches, hot subs and Italian favorites. Pepperazzi bakes their pizza fresh daily in their oven, served hot just for you."

---I hate pizzas. I only order from Vocelli's. Not much more to say.

"Schatz Dining Room (University Center, Upper Level)
The Schatz Dining Room offers a full-service, all-you-care-to-eat breakfast buffet for the campus community Monday through Friday, and an all-you-care-to-eat brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Schatz offers gourmet meals, a salad bar, daily grill features and many special theme dinners throughout the academic year. They also offer a reservation service for lunch."

Good breakfast. Not bad for dinner/lunch sometimes but you have to read what they are serving. One of the few allyoucaneat's so I guess it is alright. Some people like it but I think the majority hate it.

"Showcase Salads (University Center, Upper Level)
We feature a wide selection of made-to-go entree salads such as grilled chicken Caesar, chef salads, garden vegetables, fruit and yogurt, and Thai noodle salads or side salads. Showcase Salads is kosher."

--I hate salads. 'Nuff said.

"Si Senor (University Center, Upper Level)
Si Senor's specialties include made-to-order Mexican cuisines, wraps, tacos and quesadillas. "

---I took my baggers here and they both loved it. I guess it can get old if you eat mexican food everyday but the quesadilla thingies are really really good. They always give you a lot of food too.

"Skibo Coffeehouse (University Center, Upper Level)
Come check out the coolest hangout on campus! House specialties include a variety of coffee, espresso, sundaes, gourmet sandwiches and a large selection of vegan products. Skibo Coffeehouse offers weekly entertainment including band nights and open-mike nights."

----People like this place because of the lounges I guess but I don't find it very appealing.

"Taste of India (4902 Forbes Avenue and Resnik House)
Indian cuisine including Tandoori chicken and other traditional favorites."

---All you can eat at dinner and the food is actually pretty good. I was never a fan of indian food but I'd go if I wasn't so busy. They have a good mango drink thingy which I usually fill up on.

"The Underground (Morewood Gardens)
The Underground restaurant and student activity center is located beneath the Cyert Center for Early Education in the Morewood Gardens Complex. Follow the stairs down to The Underground for a great meal, some pool or pinball, or to catch the latest sports on the big-screen TV. Food is provided by Gullifty's, known throughout the Pittsburgh area for their great soups, sandwiches and desserts."

---I go here a lot. The food is pretty good and bands usually play here. I usually blow all my dinex here since it is a 2 min walk from New House and I can buy a crapload of Starbucks Coffee, double cappuchino, Ice cream, chocolates, and etc.

"Zebra Lounge (College of Fine Arts)
The newest coffeehouse on campus, the Zebra Lounge shares space with an art gallery with shows changing regularly. The Zebra Lounge is an excellent space to show off your artistic talents - vocally, musically or theatrically. This unique coffeehouse is great for a quick snack or to settle in and study for the afternoon. The Zebra Lounge features fair trade and organic coffees and teas. "

---I hate CFA. 'Nuff said.

Off-Campus Locations
For those times when our students happen to be off-campus, we offer multiple locations where students are able to use a meal block to grab a bite. DineXtra and PlaidCa$h may be used at the following locations:

Eat 'n Park
1816 Murray Avenue

The Original Hot Dog Shop
3901 Forbes Avenue

Vocelli Pizza
4740 Baum Boulevard

Subway
415 South Craig Street

Delivery
The Original Hot Dog Shop and Vocelli Pizza are the preferred delivery vendors of the Carnegie Mellon campus. Fresh, hot pizzas and various other dishes can be ordered using your DineXtra or CampusXpress accounts and will be delivered to your door.

Vending
Casual dining is also a part of the active lives of our students. Vending Services occupies a number of locations on campus. From the 24-hour service, students may choose entrees, soup, freshly ground coffees, assorted beverages and snacks. Many of the vending machines are enabled for on-line CampusXpress transactions. Purchases are made by swiping your Carnegie Mellon card through the card reader on the machine, which will access and deduct the cost of the purchase from your CampusXpress account.

Other recommendations:
1. Joe's hot dog shop outside of Tepper. AMAZING dogs and the guy and his wife are super-super friendly.
2. Trucks. Out by the sororities. They offer a lot of good asian food for pretty cheap.
3. Vocelli's: Takes dine x and delivers. Pizza and Wings along with 2 litres are what most people get. I think they get 90% of their business just from colleges.

so all the things mentioned above are things you buy with "dineX" points? or is it part of the 'block meal' plan... I'm not entirely sure I understand...

i agree, please explain more

You can spend dinex anywhere on campus so yes all the things mentioned above can be used with DINEX. And it is not "points" it is basically cash :)

DineX = CASH
Meal blocks = One full meal.
Anything you can use meal blocks for you can use with dinex.

I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD

sweet.

so is it better to get a meal plan with a lot of dineX points or with a lot of meal blocks...?

To future posters: Please read the rest of the thread first :)

24: "I'll say this: You're an idiot if you don't take the 70 bucks (most possible) of dine x. Meal blocks are kind of useless.

You can stash up on gum, drinks, ice cream, snacks, anything with dine-x."

*from what I see with the packages, the meals themselves are like a lot less money. like, in comparison 30 meals plus $34, versus 21 plus $76.. that makes each meal like...$4.67. Is food like cheap there? Or if I was using DineXtra, would I be spending like $10 for a cheeseburger.... making DineXtra more convenient but less valuable..
