CNN's Rick Sanchez ...Penn...Ivy League

What do you guys think about Rick Sanchez incessantly saying "Penn - an Ivy League school" on his program on CNN this weekend?
Do you think it would appear to be making fun of Penn's plight of constantly not being properly recognized, or would it actually help to raise the awareness of Penn's identity and ultimately respect?

rofl what's the point of this thread?

The point is...if it were any of the other seven schools, I doubt very much a media host would add the qualifier. That , in my opinion, really looks bad. Especially the way he says it looks as if he did it in jest. Perhaps I am oversensitive. I am graduating from Penn this May and both of my parents are Penn alum, so I am not bashing Penn. I post this out of concern of Penn's image.
And I am truly interested in the reaction out there.

well, from my experience, the general public, (the majority of the population who are not so familiar with all the ivy leagues and have attended state schools etc) only know of Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and maybe Columbia as the top ivies...the majority of them probably have no clue that Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Penn are also among the ivies....when i was applying to Penn, some of the adults i knew (friends of parents etc) would come up to me and ask "Oh, so did you get into Penn State?", despite the fact that I constantly correct them that Penn is a private school...the thing is, Penn's name itself, sounds like that of a public school lol, its name is not very "private school sounding"...if you tell a random person on the street about U Penn, he/she will probably think its a state school in Pennsylvania, not an ivy league school...however, this is not the perception held by the majority of ambitious high school kids who are in AP classes, and are aiming to go to top schools etc......

^ That's correct. Personally, I think it's great that Sanchez does that, and if more media types did that whenever Penn's name came up, the school and its true nature would develop a higher profile among the general public.

Just curious - do they ever consider changing Penn's name?

On one hand, the Ivy League is just an athletic conference so it really doesn't matter. But, even having gone to one of its schools (Cornell) I must say that I sometimes forget Penn's in the conference. I have the utmost respect for the school, it just takes my mind a minute because its name doesn't flow with the rest.

rick sanchez should get an honorary degree from penn.

^ Rick Sanchez: "And also in the news--yesterday, I received an honorary IVY LEAGUE degree from the University of Pennsylvania, AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL."

:D

The name's not going to be changed any time soon. Honestly, I don't really care either way. Whenever I've met someone outside of school from another school and I tell them I go to Penn, I can either let them incorrectly think "WOOO! PENN STATE YEAH!" or I can be an ass and correct them (e.g. "Oh... okay..."). So I generally just let it go.

Usually if they're the people who confuse it with Penn State, they're the sort of people who might simply resent you if they perceived you as going to a hoity-toit Ivy.

Meanwhile, those whose need to know, know.

So it's kind of convenient in a roundabout way. It may be the world's only pareto-optimal university name.

^LOL....10char
