How realistic is it for international students to be able to secure a co-op program? I'm trying to narrow down my list of schools, and the co-op program can almost be considered a deal breaker for me :) Will I be able to participate in 3 co-ops throughout my undergraduate years (for example, Northeastern's 5-year program allows students to do that, not sure about INTERNATIONAL students) even if each co-op is around 4-6 months? I think CPT/OPT only allows 12 months total for each degree program.

I'm thinking of majoring in chemical engineering.

I’m an international student who went to Northeastern for my first two years as an Industrial Engineer… Finding a coop in a big-name company ( such as UTC, GE, Sunoco, etc ) was rather challenging being International since they were recruiting permanent residents or citizens only. Hence, it will be a challenge compared to a business major. This does not mean that you will not get a coop but it does mean that your options are rather limited! You can only do 2 six month co-ops and not three. My Chem Engg friend was offered a coop at Sunoco but when they found out he was international, he was refused it!

Coop is definitely worth it but just make sure you are aware of the limitations of being an international students… NU marketing for co-op is more catered to the US domestic students than Internationals!

Hope this helps…
