Though I know it has been addressed a few times, should I put Co-President or just President for Student Government/Student Council down for my apps? The person I'm co with is a junior while I'm a senior. Does it even matter at all?

From a NY Times article.
"And, in the highly selective schools like Yale, padding on the resume hurts. [Yale Admissions Dean] Ms. Dahl said many applicants state that they were president of their class or captain of the soccer team when they were co-president or co-captain.

"In isolation," she said, "such self-aggrandizement is not enough for us to reject the application, but it will raise a question about the student. It's bothersome. Let's just say it doesn't endear them to us."

Or things like failing to report all S.A.T. scores, instead of just the highest one. "For example," [Yale admissions dean] Ms. Dahl said, "a number of applicants fail to report a low test score when our directions on the application instruct the student to report all scores."

"On the other hand," she said, "when they self-report a poor test score we say, 'Isn't that nice he told us.' It makes the student look nicely honest. We like that."

omg, i would also like an answer to this question. im in clubs where a senior is always president and then they essentially "train" the junior who will do the same the year after, but formally they are known as co-presidents. what would be done in this case?

and does it look any worse to be co-president and not just president?

I actually have the same question about my environmental club...

Is it really that bad? I personally don't consider it a lie and I think that anyone who does is simply overreacting, but I'm actually applying to Yale SCEA so if Yale wants that I guess I'll list it down as co.

@ trickysocksman

In my case it is sortof the same as well.

just put it down, it won't hurt you. you'll seem more honest, like Northstarmom quoted.

I am in the same situation. I am a captain/president equally with other people in some clubs. "Co-" implies subordination in my opinion. I'll probably put "Joint ____" on my app.

"Co" doesn't imply subordination. It implies two equals sharing a job.

^ Thank you for those quotes...I'm glad I found this thread!
