my d got in honors program! (we are so proud!) and can choose to live in Cobb with another honors student (honors program will select roommate). she is a serious student; no partying, etc., but is looking forward to making new friends at college. HS friends not in honors say as a freshman, she should live in South campus, instead of taking advantage of the Cobb dorm offer. They say that there will not be many people to make friends with at Cobb, and that there are plenty of non-partiers in south campus. Any advice? Thanks.

Not only are there plenty of nonpartiers, there are plenty of honors students. My d's whole floor at Craige North on South Campus seems to be honors with a 'sprinkling' of Robertsons ;).

Is there any chance she can visit and check the place out? North and Mid Campus are more conveniently located to classes, but South isn't THAT far away and most South dorms are located very near the Ramshead where there is a dining facility.

uncwife&mom: My daughter lived in Cobb as a freshman and loved it. She liked that it was so close to classes, and didn't seem to have any problem meeting people. I will just add here, too, that Cobb is a beautiful dorm. It looks like a 1920/30's style Art Deco hotel to me. It was completely renovated in 2005. Cobb is also theme housing (Connected Learning), so I think a fair number of freshman will be there.

my sister hated cobb. it is isolated somewhat, look on a map....which makes the walking home late at night (you do it even though they have buses) scary. may be better with the parking deck finished. she also seldom even saw people in the halls....just wasn't a friendly active dorm.....like i said it is a little isolated off by itself. there was an attack this year on that road. just food for thought. sure the being with honors kids is great but why not meet one through the roommate service and pick a dorm you really want to be in. FYI, difficult dorm to move into ....tons of stairs. heavy doors that shut auto to rooms so you can't even leave your door open....thats all i heard.

Wait. Cobb is "isolated??" Isolated from what? It's on North campus, really close to classes and fairly close to Franklin Street, right next door practically to admissions and the Center for Dramatic Art, across the street from the Arboretum. I thought it was an incredible dorm, but I've only seen it since the renovation that was finished a year or so ago. But isolated?? I guess it depends on your perspective. Are you sure you're thinking Cobb?

Being next door to the center for dramatic arts and Jackson hall isn't anything special. I live in Graham dorm and would agree, Cobb is pretty isoated. It does have those tennis courts that I oh so love though. It's very nice inside of it, so I wouldn't say it's a bad dorm, just a little out of the way.

When I think of "isolated," I think of a place with absolutely nothing else around it--completely separate and alone. That's why I mentioned the Center for Dramatic Arts, close proximity to classes, etc. Again, I guess it depends on your perspective.

Cobb is enough isolated you can or may be able to cut through behind Connor and others on that other street to get to campus IF and only if no construction fences. It is isolated enough so that the POINT TO POINT BUSES DO NOT RUN BY IT.

To continue.
P2P buses run the late night shuttles for safety. so If you are at the library late, you still have a long walk along a sidewalk that is dimly lit alone......and that sidewalk is across from a wooded area (which is where the attack was somene came up from the woods) and the forest theatre. it is not next door to any building that is active at night. none. the admissions office is on one side and the arts building the other.....after that the cemetary. My mom fought with them to get the p2p to go by there but the school won't do it to country club road which is where this dorm is. At least the south campuses are serviced by the p2p and there are large dorms with lots of students walking to and from. Cobb is one dorm in between non dorms.
btw, the ugly tennis courts are gone......

If you have a campus map you can look at HWY 54 & country club Dr.....start there and go towards town on country club. Cobb is H shaped on the left after the cemetary, arts center and is across from the wooded theater on that road. No buildings on the right side of the road until you get to Raleigh street. The next dorm on the left is on down past the admissions building (which you will never go to!!!) and around a corner near Raleigh Street. THe Arboretum is on down the street where it intersects with Raleigh Street...My sister is now in Kenan community --Alderman dorm which backs up to the President's house/and franklin. It was a total different experience. P2P runs right by it....Open doors on hall so more social....t.v. watching parties.....great quad for sunbathing, study rooms, etc. I am going in as a freshman in the fall and plan on south campus where most freshies are....if i go north, i like connor/or kenan communities. Safer late night walk, with more people. Before in Cobb, she would be alone walking after other dorms were passed by.

michelega: Rumor has it that they're putting the tennis courts back--new ones, I guess (after the parking deck is done--maybe it's done already--not sure). The "wooded area" is the botanical garden across the street, or maybe just a park? I thought it was the Arboretum--not sure--but it would be remarkably dumb for any female to walk through that park late at night, alone. That would be true anywhere, unfortunately. Here's a map:
http://www.fac.unc.edu/YouAreHere/Residence.asp

If she's honors and chooses South Campus she will most likely be in one of the new directional dorms. The huge majority of kids there will be honors/scholarship kids and those dorms are not wild at all. Very nice dorms and easier to meet people than at Cobb for freshman. That's what I'd recommend doing.

As for Cobb being isolated, I would agree somewhat. It's kind of tucked back in a location that makes it kind of hidden. I think there's a lot of people that don't know where it is or have never even seen it. That said, distance wise, it's a lot closer to everything than South Campus. I think there's a lot of theme housing stuff there though (at least this year) so that might be something to consider.

You're not going to only hang out with honors students, so don't worry about being with honors kids. Oh and contrary to popular belief, honors students party just as much as us "regular" students.

Jack, i my recollection from attending orientation with her, moving in and out and a visit or two was.....
The " formal gardens" are across from her current dorm which is Alderman on Raleigh Street right behind the President's house. YOu can walk out the Raleigh Road end of her building cross the street and be in the garden.

Across from Cobb and sitting down from the street was a out door theatre shakesperean, and beside it may be technically a "garden" but is not the formal garden as such ....nothing like the one that runs on the OTHER side of Raleigh Street from Alderman and the Kenan Quad.

The arboretum ( vined covered walk) is at the end of the gardens.....the other end is a wall behind what may be spencer dorm....that garden is tagged and labelled (every tree) with a pebble walking trail. beautiful. There may be something else across from Cobb dorm but....there is defintitely the outdoor theatre, a dirt sidewalk with a no parking signs....maybe a picnic table or two....i sat on the wall at the theatre for a bit.....I dont remember seeing a garden but...who knows.

Back to my point. She disliked the heavy auto closing doors to each room, the isolated location from the other dorms and the fact that none of the shuttles would go by that dorm. THey run raleigh st. instead. She did not did not feel safe. I believe if you search the daily tar heel last fall you will find at least one attack of a woman from behind on that stretch....

I looked at my map. Battle park is directly across next to the forest theatre. the aboretum is at Battle and Raleigh sts. BTW, the attacks were at 2:00 pm. during daylight....but again that road is right at the fringe of campus ....

michelega: Yeah, I think it is Forest Theatre that's across from Cobb. There is actually a sidewalk and metered parking spaces all up that street (Country Club Rd) that Cobb faces. Maybe you're remembering the place from being under construction last year. Students didn't actually get to move in until just before Thanksgiving last year. All the kids assigned to Cobb (last year) were actually living in Baity Hill (married student housing for grad students that is really off the beaten path), because Cobb's renovation wasn't finished, and so they didn't move in until November. So I think that's my perspective. (There's isolated, and then--you know--there's isolated.)

As far as the road being at the "fringe of campus," it's a pretty well-traveled road, with some residential areas running right off of it (Gimghoul), so it's not like it's out in the country. ;)

By the way, they did put back in the tennis courts and now have basketball courts there, too, I believe. Or maybe that's volleyball courts--I can't remember.

At any rate, glad she's in a dorm she now loves and where she feels safe. I hope she's happier. I honestly don't care who moves where--it's not like I have stock in any of the dorms--just offering what I know.

"BTW, the attacks were at 2:00 pm. during daylight....but again that road is right at the fringe of campus ...."

Wasn't it just one attack...some nutty guy dressed head to toe in white? No other incidents since the one, I believe.

there were several that day by the same guy....one on that area of campus but the other one somewhere else may have been in a nearby town.....that is my recollection. It was a very strange case.....i will see if i can pull it up on daily tar heel archive. I dont remember the white but definitely nutty! By fringe, I meant easy to hope on 54 and head down the hill towards who knows where.

daily tar heel: 1/12/07 Department of Public Safety officials are working with the Chapel Hill Police Department in the investigation of an assault that occurred Wednesday on campus, said Randy Young, spokesman for DPS.

A woman was assaulted by man 3 p.m. Wednesday as she walked from the Forest Theatre toward Country Club Road. The man was described as being in his early to mid-20s, at least 6 feet tall, with a pale complexion and short dark hair.

Chapel Hill police announced Wednesday night that there might be connections between the campus assault and two other incidents that occurred on Hillsborough Street.

Chapel Hill police believe the same man might be responsible for all three incidents.

thanks michelega - I had not heard about the Hillsborough incidents! Has any other assaults occurred since then...or have they identified/arrested the guy?
