Cockrell Admissions Chances

I am currently a Junior at a very large and competitive public school in Houston.
My SAT scores were:
CR: 730
Math:670
Writing:720
I have yet to take my subject tests and will probably retake SAT.
My Gpa is 6.5 on the 7.0 scale (unsure of conversions).
I am in the top 12% of the class.
My ECs include:
Band, Water Polo, physics club(officer), civil rights club, and german club
I scored a 218 on the psat, so will most likely be in the semi-finals for national merit
My job experience is pretty extensive/varied
I plan to rack up 20-50 hours of community service this summer
And I'm basically a badass who doesn't follow anybody's rules but my own.
Chances?

It’s gonna be pretty hard without being top 10%. Your SAT is a bit weak too, try to aim for 750+ on the math section and the math subject tests. I guess you’ve taken plenty of AP classes too? It’s kind of luck based getting into UT and engineering if you’re outside of top 10% :/

Yeah I’m taking pretty much all the AP classes offered at my school. I thought they were going to give kids with less than perfect gpa’s a better chance now.

well its top 8% this next school year so should have good chances, your sat scores are very good but UTs program is just hard to get into, i would have some backup schools aswell, because even if you dont get in Uts engineering program i am pretty sure another schools program will accept you

I highly recommend taking the ACT as well. With a 7.0 scale, it sounds like you are at a Cy-Fair or Katy school. Students in these districts tend to do very well on the ACT. UT will translate the score into a comprable SAT score. It could really help you if you do well. You definitely should be a semi-finalist. With that and an improved test score, I think you will get in. Good luck!

thanks for the advice
