Cockrell School of Engineering Questions Thread!

You can , however, get a Business Foundations certification with your Engineering degree. Also I think theirs an Business route to Engineering major available (not 100% sure).

yrah their is a business route to enginneering available and i heard its a great program !

There’s a big difference between business foundations and business route to engineering. The former gets your a certificate from the business school, you can major in anything. Frankly, the certificate is pretty useless. The latter, is for business majors taking some basic sequence engineering classes.

Neither program will open any doors career wise. You are not going to get a business related job just because you have a business foundations certificate. Similarly, you are not going to get an engineering job with a BBA, just because you did BRE. The programs more or less gives you a taste in business/engineer for those who are interested.

My high school teacher once gave me a very good piece of advice when I was on the edge between business and engineering - “you can always go to business grad school with an engineering degree, but you can not go to engineering grad school with a business degree.”

If you are choosing between business and engineering, it would be wise to do engineering, as it’s a more versatile undergrad major. If you find yourself wanting to explore business, you can get a MBA later.

hey all,

how many of you had to work a part or full time job while going to UT Cockrell?

I am planning on applying to UT for Civil Eng. since I am almost done with my pre-reqs.

I really don’t want to work while I’m in school Full-Time for engineering since i know it is really tough and I want good grades.

So, did FAFSA cover most of your living expenses or did you work while in school? -is basically my main question.

Financial aid is too individual for an answer to that part of your question. If you have already submitted your FAFSA, UT will probably award your aid in April.
If you can find a way to make it through your 1st 2 years, you can make good money, gain experience, and earn credit by co-oping.

So is engineering honors rolling admission or has everyone in the program already been accepted?

Cool, that makes sense, working and trying to gain exp. by co-oping. I wouldn’t mind doing that.

I see what you mean about FAFSA being different for each person, I figured everyone got about the same average aide and loans but I read about EFC’s and what not.

Thanks though

What are the names of the teachers you took the classes with for ChemE?

My son has alread been accepted into EE and this weekend received a scholarship offer, but hasn’t heard yet about honors. I saw earlier in the thread that someone had already gotten in honors. I’m wondering if the scholarship offer is a good sign as far as being offered a spot in honors, or if everyone gets one. Anyone else heard they got in honors? When do they normally send out acceptances?

My son is a freshman in ASE. He received a scholarship, but was not accepted into honors. It hasn’t held him back though! He is a team-lead in a grant-funded student project. Students who show interest and initiative will have more opportunities than their schedules can handle. Cockrell takes really good care of all the engineering students -not just the ones in honors.

Yeah, my son isn’t worried about it either (in fact has considered not doing it even if he’s accepted), I’m just curious.

Good to hear though that your son loves it. Mine is really looking forward to it!

It depends on the scholarship your son got.
If he got the flagship scholarship - Cockrell Scholarship, he’s definitely in honors.

How is the Computer Engineering at Cockrell and how different is it from CS at the Colleges of Science?

Computer Engineering (ECE) is for designing computer hardware. They take some software classes and learn assembly languages.
Computer Science is for writing computer softwares. The emphasis is on writing programs and not designing hardware.

What type/amount of merit aid were you offered? Was it based on sat/act scores? Specifically for Cockrell School of Engineering. Purdue on its website gives up to $10,000
for out of state students with Act above 30. UT is not specific in fact they are very vague about merit aid.

got into Eng Honors program with a scholarship offer - $ 6000 / yr .The scholarship offer came three weeks ago .The Honors program accepetance came long before that.

Piggle. Was it based on act/sat, grades, or all of the above? What were your stats if you don’t mind sharing?

Piggle’s mom posting on her behalf. The letter did not mention the basis of scholarship-(has to maintain 3.5 GPA ) plans to do BME.

Piggle’s scores- SAT 2340, ACT 35 ,SAT 2 Math 800, chem 790 or 800 ??( not sure ) English 780. Top 0.1% . . took 8 APs so far ( seven fives & one four ) National AP scholar.
total APs will be 15 or 16 ( again not sure) by the end of senior year

Wow, you have a smart daughter, Piggle! Very cool. My son got accepted to BME, so maybe they’ll meet up.

Wow! And my poor kido thinks she has a shot with just an ACT of 34 and high grades. Congratulations you must be very very proud.
