Perhaps the first question should be "does coincidence exist?"

I am personally fascinated by coincidence, but I'm never sure what to make of it. Rationality tells me it is a matter of being there at the right time, but irrationality fancies that it is perhaps star-cross'd.

Sometimes someone’s life and your own life meet.
It’s weird cos I fancy I’m the only one who is involved in my story, so to think someone else’s story and mine just meet without any intervention is scary.
If life is chance then it is only up to me to keep it from being messed up. That’s scary.
That said I don’t believe that things happen for a reason I think things just happen. I’m a big believer in free will and pick your own destiny.

What is rationality exactly anyways? If you think about it science is based on “coincidence.” It could be a coincidence that every single person is attracted to the Earth, and gravity may not exist (I know it’s actually curves in the fabric of space according to latest theories and not technically attraction, but I’m trying to keep my point clear).

IMO, it’s all about human perspective at the end of the day. People just use the word “coincidence” when there seems to be evidence against what they personally believe in, just as a way to shrug it off.

Today I was volunteering at the local clinic and there was this other really nice volunteer. Middle-aged dude with bright red hair. We were working on the same floor and talked quite a bit. So anyway, he left at 11am and I left at about noon.

Then…

I was driving around town (I live in a moderately sized town, about 30,000 residents) at about 3pm that same day and I look to my right…and there he is in the car next to me. I just found that really weird. The day I meet him, I randomly see him at that same traffic light at the same time, hours later? Coincidental, I dont know.

I got on the express bus today to go to Manhattan with my friend and another friend was on it too. Thought that was cray - didn’t expect to meet anyone else on the 11:31 bus.

Tell me, I cross path with the same person multiple time. The first time was on purpose, every other time was just random and I doubt that was a mere coincidence. Ok it wasn’t because I’m continually seeing the same person in the hallway over and over and will most likely continue over the next school year.

I play a CoD game and I keep killing the same guy and he keep killing me over and over (most of our kill/death involve each other). Nemisis is not a coincidence.

I walk all the way downstair and look out the window at the exact time someone come in our driveway. Not a coincidence

A little more close to home at college confidential…

I joined the superintendent’s advisory council in my district this last year. There is another junior on the council from a nearby high school. After getting to know this kid for a year… I happened to visit Harvard the exact same info session as him… And I happened (on a completely separate trip) to visit UChicago the exact same info session as him. Of all the days and times of the year… (And he ended up in my city at Boy’s State, on a side note.) I dunno… Seems pretty coincidental, haha…
