Colby College Class of 2023 RD

Different sources provide slightly different climate data, but this one can be handy for U.S. locations, @vikiii:

Temperatures in Waterville fall to about -14 °C on January mornings; from a separate source, Beijing falls to -8 °C.

Thanks @singingbear and @EganAg! After the reject from Colby she was WL at Bowdoin and accepted to Hamilton. Hamilton is too expensive, though. They didn’t meet our demonstrated FAFSA need… They seem to use their own formula ? I think we are giving up on the NESCACs and focusing elsewhere. She got a great aid package to F&M and we still have a few other schools we are waiting to hear from. Good luck to everyone here!

My DD received a nice letter today congratulating her on her admissions. There was also a handwritten message with some personal details that they took from her application. Thought that was a really great touch!

I recieved a similar letter, however I think they might have mixed me up with a different person. I’m not sure though because i put mathematics as my third choice major and that’s what they talked about in the handwritten letter, but what makes me think it’s for the wrong person is that is tali’s about performing arts and I didn’t say anything about performing arts in my application (but I did in apps to other schools). Is there anywhere on my portal where I can see what major I got into and double check it’s not math and that the letter was just to the wrong person?

@teddy10143 I don’t think you are admitted (as an entering student) to a specific major – you’ll have the opportunity to explore and change your mind (my son is now majoring in something very different from what he had in mind when he was admitted).

Agree w @colfac92… Unaware of any commitment to any major for new admits freshman year.An unfortunate but perhaps forgiven oversight of the admit officer that wrote the letter. No mention in sons letter regarding any particular “Major” commitment. After all a bit of the whole process at a great LAC like Colby is the chance to explore so much ,for many freshmen / sophomores before deciding…

my daughter also was rejected at Amherst, waitlisted at Williams, accepted at Colby, Hamilton, F&N and Lehigh, Hoping she picks Colby, so much closer to home.

@parentgeorgia @colfac92 thanks! I just realized in the note it only said “welcome to the math department” so yah, it didnt say my major, only the department, and it wasn’t even for the right person so it’s okay! Haha I would’ve liked to know what they would’ve said about me in the note but oh well

@Mrjacmel …Congrats to your daughter. Our S also looked initially at your daughter’s LAC choices. He did choose Colby…Looks like geography will play a role in her decision…We saw it as a bit varied within that elite group…location with regards to urban/rural/city and with some differences in weather…O/W we saw few differences within the group except for left /right leaning poli/social culture…yet they are rather close…Godspeed with that decision !

Just withdrew my acceptance! Good luck to the waitlist

Colby’s acceptance rate this year was 9.5% with an average 1500 SAT. My DD is a current freshman (came from a very strong prep school) and finds it very academically challenging.

Remember…that 1500 is from “reported” scores as Colby allows students to apply without score submission.
Thus, I remain unsure as to how significant that number (1500) is…

@parentgeorgia do you think that some students may report higher than actual test scores? I hope nobody are ready to test the water.

last year (when test scores were still required) the average SAT was 1490, so going test optional did not drastically change the average sat score.

@Skywalkercn. No. The reporting of test scores comes directly from the college board.
@xyz123@.Interesting how there are several reported “avg.test scores” depending on the source. Prep Scholar put it at 1420 last year and Princeton Review had it at 1415. Incredibly high nonetheless and top 3%.

@parentgeorgia I know it is splitting hairs at these levels, but I thought you might like to read Colby’s press release from last year. Please see the thread from this forum which links directly to Colby’s press release. 730 English, 760 Math and 33 ACT for students accepted to the class of 2022. Crazy high average score whichever source you read! (Princeton Review references scores for enrolled students vs accepted students and Prepscholar’s info is a bit dated.) Congratulations to your son on being accepted to a wonderful school!!

@xyz123a Thank you so much for this link…and you said it ! Crazy High scores. We are thrilled for him and thank you for your sentiments, Having seen a few posts, if your S is at Colby…how are things? we just returned from accepted students weekend and enjoyed it very much…

@parentgeorgia - my son is having a great year! He narrowed his selection down to 4 schools and Colby’s admitted student weekend sealed the deal for him. He had a great experience there last year, so much so that he was a host this year. He is introverted and not a partier at all and has been able to find great friends. All of the comments mentioned about admitted students weekend this year ring true. The kids he has met are incredibly bright, interesting, and collaborative. He has found a job on campus as well as an internship in Waterville and loves both. Academics are very challenging, but not overwhelming. Professors are readily available for office hours. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions!!

@xyz123a my daughter is slightly introvert too,but seems that she will not be alone or feel so at Colby! Great!

Good to hear from you both…!
