Colby vs hamilton

The title says it all. I am trying to decide between these two very similar schools and I am wondering if anyone can help me make a decision. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My son is in the same position, having been accepted to both of these schools (among others). When we visited both schools last summer, he liked the feel of Hamilton and seemed to connect more with the students and the overall environment than Colby. However his brother, who is one year younger and likes snowboarding and the outdoors, strongly prefers the feel of Colby over Hamilton, and may apply ED1 to Colby in the Fall.

At this point, my son is strongly leaning towards going to Hamilton. He really likes the fact that there are no distribution requirements (he is planning on double majoring in Government and Economics) and the school feels “right” to him.

I agree that the schools are pretty comparable and one really can’t go wrong either way.

Hi, I am a sophomore at Colby and I love it! I didn’t look at Hamilton when I was applying to college, so I may not be too helpful when comparing these two schools, but I can definitely say that the Colby community is unique, and I’m glad I go here! That being said, both schools are great and you should choose whichever school feels right to you. I had that feeling when I visited the Colby campus before I applied. Everyone is friendly, we have amazing professors, and a beautiful campus. The distribution requirements are not hard to fulfill-there are no specific classes you have to take (except English 115, but you can place out with AP), e.g. you can take logic for the math requirement-you don’t have to take a specific calculus class. Let me know if you have any questions about Colby!

These are peer institutions and gut feeling is all that can really make the decision if finances are off the table. You might read the course listings in a favorite department at each one.

I am a Sophomore at Colby and absolutely love it! I was also highly interested in Hamilton during my college decision process. Both schools are wonderful but the feel is definitely different. Firstly, I think Colby is more outdoorsy than Hamilton, probably just due to the fact that it is located in Maine and not New York. I also found Colby to feel more welcoming, which is not to say that the Hamilton students weren’t extremely friendly. I could be wrong, but the vibe at Hamilton seemed more competitive to me. People at Colby are not very competitive with one another and we are a tight knit community. Everyone is always smiling here! COME TO COLBY!!

I am the parent of a Colby Freshman. I agree with dancer4192 and everyone else on this threat: Colby is a great place. My daughter had seen Hamilton but did not want to apply there, but did want to apply to Colby. One thing to consider: Many more days of sunshine in the winter at Colbly than at Hamilton! That was one deciding factor for my daughter. She doesn’t care for gloomy days.
