I got accepted to andover, but now i am really thinking about not attending because i really like my current school which is a good school but no where near as academically challenging as andover, or doesn't offer nearly as many opportunities. I would have to repeat a year at andover though which i really dont like the idea of doing. Would it be a bad decision to withdraw my spot at andover?

That’s entirely up to you. I ended up loving my ninth grade year at my public high school, but I still am giong to happily attend boarding school this fall. Try to think about what it was that made you want to go to Andover in the first place. Weigh out the pros and cons of going there compared to your current school. Talk to your parents and get their input. Sleep on it and see if you feel the same in a week or so. The feeling may fade, or it might remain.

If you feel completely uncomfortable with the idea and know for sure it isn’t the place for you anymore then you wont be doing anybody any good by going there if you’re only going to be unhappy. It’s a big decision though because once you withdraw, you can’t exactly change your mind.

Think about what you want in the future. Can your current school get you there? You probably have good friends now at your current school, but I’m sure you’ll have no problems making friends and adjusting at Andover either, even as a repeat.

xx- don’t let fear win! Tons of kids get cold feet. Just work hard to battle your worries because they WILL go away once you’re there. I can promise that you will look back at this time and say to yourself “I’m so glad that I took the risk.” It will be life changing and life affirming. Andover is a truly great school with wonderful students and faculty. Keep your chin up and chase those cares away!!

x-c-x, this is the second thread that you’ve started talking about how you don’t really want to go to Andover anymore. It’s time to be true to yourself. Go talk to your parents and tell them you feel that you’ve outgrown your desire to go to BS. It’s time to talk to them, instead of wondering out loud to a bunch of strangers.

She’s right. Once your parents have the paid the first part of the tuition the money is GONE (unless you have tuition refund which only gives SOME money back). Also, you should think long term, not just what your feeling right now…

Repeat a year of school?? Seriously, why would you want to do that if you are happy where you are?

You’ll like Andover. I guarantee it.

100% totally agree with momb2k and urbanflop. It’s impossible for us to assess whether your concerns are “real” and “genuine” or if you’ve just got a case of “cold feet” as you’ve titled this thread. The right answer here is highly specific to you and requires details and nuances that can’t possibly be processed over an Internet message board and the stakes are way too high for us to engage in speculation as though this is something whimsical – such as a request to “chance” you. Talk to the family about this.

There are many different opinions here. To not get confused, you should listen to yourself first. Discuss the pros and cons with family/friends who know you best. But it always feels better to make your own decision. If you’re a great student, no matter which school you go to, you’ll still accomplish your goals.

BAHHH! Just go and see what happens. NOthing hurts when you try. Unless its deathly. I mean come on! Andover. The Andover. Thousands and thousands of people applied for your spot and you don’t want it nomore? That is the equivalent of winning the lottery winning millions of dollars, but you don’t want it anymore because you don’t know how your going to spend it.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and once your done, your going to be glad you made it. Once your done, your going to be glad you made it into Harvard. Once your done, your going to be glad your at the top of your career. And once your done, your going to encourage your kids to go because of the amazing opportunity you had.
If you go back now, to either a day school or public school, you are going to be happy, for the first month about your decision, and then afterwards your going to be like"What the hell have I done"
Because your not going to be challenged, your not going to actually learn something, and your not going to be happy in public school because no one really is, even the “popular kids”( trust me I know)
So calm down, relax, do your summer reading, and wait until you go to the school. =)
