Colgate 2009-2010 Admissions Help

So this is Colgate's supplement esssay. I don't really understand well enough to start writing. Can anyone explain?

Please use this brief essay to help us get to know you beyond what is defined in your scholastic and extracurricular record. In 250 words or less, please respond to the following:

We honor the many different forms of diversity in our community. Your perspective is valuable because it comes from your life experiences, family background, and culture. Please tell us about yourself and what you believe is the best way to share your perspective. Also, what do you hope to learn from the experiences of others?

Classic diversity essay. Hard to write for crackers like myself.

Anyways, I’d personally suggest explaining how your personality/actions sets you apart from others around yourself.

Seems quite straightforward. Share things about YOU that’s apart from academics and ECs (in other words, things we already know about). That could be something that you believe defines you or the perspective you bring to the table. What you hope to gain from being in a diverse student body is pretty straight forward.

So … winging it, just because I feel like it. I’ve put my countdown feature on my iPhone to 5 minutes …

I am from a small town in Iowa. As farmers we tend to get up quite early, solve things and move on with our day. The beauty of that is we get things done. The downside is that it can become ‘ready-shoot-aim.’ We tend to be self-deprecatory regarding our accomplishments and have a rather dry sense of humor. We’re honest to a fault, non-sarcastic and don’t trust people that can’t look us in the eye. We also carry a bit of an attitude about that ‘fly over zone’ stuff 0 it gets old after a while.

When I get interested in something, I really get interested in it where I can get a bit overboard and just try to suck up all information I can find on a subject. By meeting others that think quite differently from me I’ll gain additional perspectives that enhance and give additional meat to my own ideas and perhaps expand into new ideas. That’s something I look forward to.

okay … it’s not much but it’s only five minutes … think what you could do in five hours.
