Its like comparing an apple to a piece of steak. UCLA is very large and impersonal. I graduated from there and neither of my children applied. One is at Dartmouth and one just was accepted to Colgate. We live in So Cal 45 minutes from UCLA. Undergraduate classes are mostly large lectures, it is in an urban setting, although a very nice one. Is close to the beach - another plus. Colgate has small classes, in a rural setting, where one can make a difference. It really depends on if you want a large university, or a small one where you are noticed and can contribute in a meaningul way. You really can’t compare the two as they are so very different.
Daughter came home to the fed ex envelope and texted me right away. She is in!!! Yahoooooo. This was one of her top choices, so know she is thrilled. Still waiting to hear from 5 schools, but this one was a huge relief.
@eiknarf - I with you. I am very amazed and humbled that my daughter was accepted. she has a a 3.98 unweighted 4.4 weighted, 32 ACT and some activities - not a boatload. For those not accepted, I am a firm believer in the philosophy that you get in where you are meant to be. There are so many excellent choices and so many excellent candidates. I know that you will all end up where you should be and where you will thrive. One person’s opinion - or a committee’s should not shape your opinion of yourself. You have all worked hard and succeeded thus far in life and I know you will continue to do so.

Yes, the Dean of Admission, Gary Ross, and his entire staff are a class act. The personalized letters of acceptance are one of their hallmarks, rather unique to Colgate, which have stood the test of time.
Go 'gate!
@Bluebrry: As measured by faculty publishing, Colgate’s economics department appears to be outstanding, ranking seventh when compared to 195 peers. UCLA is also strong, ranking 19th in its category.
(“Economics Departments at Liberal Arts Colleges” and “US Economics Departments,” IDEAS.)
@WestVirginia130: Colgate appears as a “top choice” on an online list, “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs,” should this be of interest to you.
