Given that letters to US applicants were posted more than a week ago I suggest that you call the Office of Admission for a replacement notification.

Best of luck!

First time posting one of these.

Decision: Accepted with tons of FA.

World H: 4

• IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
• Senior Year Course Load: Micro,Macro,Psych,Chem,Comp. gov,Lit,Calc BC,Stat (most of them are self-study; also I skip school to study them.) I am also learning Java, Python, and C on my own using online resources.
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing really! I tried to make it to 2011 AIME but didn’t make it. Didn’t have the necessary time to prepare.

Subjective:

• Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student government and nothing much. Quite lousy. I wish I did Science Olympiad and Math Team stuff like that which my school doesn’t have.
• Job/Work Experience: Nothing.
• Volunteer/Community service: Few hours for tutoring, but I make sure I do it well.
• Summer Activities: Mainly reading books on advanced mathematics and social science (history, econ, psych) on my own.
• Essays: Don’t remember them.
• Teacher Recommendation: No clue but was probably alright.
• Counselor Rec: No clue… was probably lousy
• Additional Rec: Nope
• Interview: Tomatoes

Other
• Country (if international applicant): Bangladesh but live in US (still considered int’l)
• School Type: Public
• Ethnicity: Asian
• Gender: male
•Income Bracket: Quite low (<$60,000)
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nah

Reflection
• Strengths: I love to study all subjects by myself.
• Weaknesses: Poor ECs and poor freshman grades. Slacking in 9th grade and 10th grade, but became a workaholic since 11th.
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No clue. I was int’l applying for FA yet I got in. Makes no sense. My best friend who is a US citizen and first-gen and similar grades/better ECs got rejected. Many who were rejected deserved this spot and I admit it.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected at most other LACs. Accepted to the Cooper Union’s engineering program. Stuck on what to do next.

General Comments:
• I don’t know much about Colgate much less how I even managed to got in. The holsitic admissions process is becoming a big failure in my opinion but it makes the US special. Oh well. I’m happy and I hope you all got in where you will enjoy learning and living. I feel that education depends not on where you attend but on your will.

Congratulations everyone  Is anyone planning on going to the alumni receptions? Can anyone provide insight on what will go on at the event?

will not be attending

Hi Firework2,

Just curious, where will you be attending college?

Just a heads up about the receptions. I went to the reception in NYC a few weeks ago, and the people were extremely nice and friendly. Coming out of the reception I felt very happy about it and felt like attending the school simply based on how nice the people were.

However on the academic side of things, I did not feel that the the school represented a wide variety of its students. Most of the alumni I met were graduates in subjects like English/poli sci/psychology and it did not reflect well on my opinion of the school because I am the math/science type. It would have made sense to include a few alumni who majored in the scientific fields to prove that the school is well endowed in “liberal arts AND sciences” and not just “liberal arts”. However, there may be reasons for this. One I would guess being that science and math majors are less likely to attend voluntary receptions well because, they are voluntary and also because they form a small subset of the Colgate population. However I was disappointed of not having met any students who majored in economics since I hear that is one of Colgate’s strong points.

If I were you, I would not judge a school by its reception. The best way to feel a school is by talking with the professors about a field you enjoy and by talking with students who are currently majoring or already majored in a field you enjoy. Talking to people who did not major in your area of interest will provide you with general information about the school, but won’t really give you much about the academic qualities of the school that distinguish it from others, which is by far the most important thing in a school, finances and other externalities permitting.

It is the academics and networking that you bring with you to your career and the rest of your life after all, and while other factors are important, these should be the most important by far.

In the end I chose the Cooper Union but that was more a matter of liberal arts vs. engineering than about either school’s specific qualities.

Colgate is nevertheless an excellent school, only that the name reminds me of a toothpaste brand I am not too fond of. But that is a very minor thing to consider.

NP

has anyone heard yet from the wait list? Do we know if they are going to the wait list this year and when they’ll tell us?

franklin and marshall

any waitlist news?
