Colgate Waitlist

So, any other Colgate waitlistees out there have any hope? Any thoughts on what the odds are gonna be like? What did you guys think of the w.l. confirmation letter? It wasn't TOTALLY discouraging. Ungh! I hate this!

nikrud - This waitlist business is difficult! Only 5 from the waitlist last year. Hoping they go to the waitlist this year. Are you waitlisted other places?

I was waitlisted also. Any idea how many were waitlisted as opposed to rejected?

momstl4-D was also WL'd @ Newhouse/Syracuse. Decided not to stay on Newhouse WL, they only take 200-250 kids anyway? Seems fruitless. D had gotten over Colgate, but then got that letter laast week encouraging her to stay on the WL, with the little handwriten note from dean of admissions. That started her hoping for Colgate again, but we showed her past stats and now she's been reinvigorated for her next 2 choices , Indiana Huttons Honor College and U of Wash - Seattle. Seattle sems to be winnng, coming from Ohio, too! I was surprised. I'll have a child on both coas The WL situation this year seems to be wierd, I don't expect much, and D is not sure that if she wasn't good enough 1st time around, there's no love lost. This has been a crappy year for admissions here in our part of Ohio, I can't believe how many kids from this area were waitlisted at their top schools. So glad this is my youngest! Good luck on Colgate's WL, I have a feeling my D will not be taking up a spot on it. Great school. she and her DAd and i loved it, but guess it wasn't meant to be!! But really, good luck to you!!!!

nikrud - odd year here for admissions in Missouri. Many kids waitlisted or denied admissions to top schools that kids previous year got in with same stats. S has some other good choices he will be happy with, but is still curious about Colgate as he really liked his visit there.

I was also waitlisted at Colgate but I've decided to stay on it.
I'm really nervous and losing hope, especially with the stats given ><

Get ready to be strung along. Colgate is the only school I know of (there could very well be others though) that will invite you to enter the SUMMER waiting list if you do not get accepted off of the spring waiting list!

Summer waiting list?

Yup, while other schools normally send a rejection letter if you do not get off of the waiting list, Colgate will send you another letter asking if you would like to sign up for the summer waiting list.

waitlisted, but declined their offer at the waitlist. allready decided on William and Mary, but colgate sent me a great letter wishing me luck and success even though i would nto be attending.

What kind of communication have those of you who have chosen to remain on the waitlisthad with the admissions folks at Colgate? I got a letter thanking me for returning the post card. Has anyone heard anything else-- e-mails, phone calls, personal notes etc?

Nothing here since the thank - you letter. D's GC sent in some new info and a new letter of rec, but after she spoke with Colgate, she said the chances are slim they'll need their waitlist, but it's worth a shot anyway.

Thanks for the info nidrud. Slim chances of going to the waitlist isn't good.

Well, the May 1st response date is here. Soon we should know if they will be going to the waitlist or not. Does anyone know last years date that they began to notify the students on the waitlist?

"I don't expect much, and D is not sure that if she wasn't good enough 1st time around, there's no love lost."

She was good enough or she would have been rejected outright. It boils down to nothing more than too many qualified applicants and building a class. Maybe Colgate needed two oboe players, a running back, two tennis players and 6 physics wiz kid, etc. You get the idea. After accounting for the athletic, legacy, developmental, kids of congressman and the fact many more women apply than men, I hope you can understand there simply aren’t enough spots for every qualified student. Being from Ohio or the Northeast doesn’t help either. A disproportionate number of applications are from these areas.

What I’m curious about is: Mid size, rural LAC vs. large, very urban university. How did that happen? Woman of two minds, I assume.;)

fwiw UW is a great university in a wonderful area.

While I agree with Skiitifucan - I think it is important to remember that at a school that is not need blind, that can definitely be a consideration in the decision. At a small school the exact size of the class matters which is why there is a summer waitlist. Colgate strives [from everything we hear] to keep its enrollment below 2800 so that we all have access to the amazing facilities on campus, etc. I know it must be a terrible feeling to not know where you might matriculate next year, but I truly believe Colgate is the type of school that is more than worth the wait. Show your interest and reaffirm your passion for the school - this school is built on the backs of people who really want to be ere and call this place home - your communication with admissions should reflect that.

Then again, what do I know? I am only a sophomore.

"I think it is important to remember that at a school that is not need blind, that can definitely be a consideration in the decision"

You're correct, of course. And I'm well aware that might have contributed to the decision. I always find it difficult to inform parents your kid is great, if only you could afford to pay full price. Back to my issue with hard working middle class parents having their children rejected based on ability to pay.
It's the system we have to work with but it doesnt make it any easier to accept

"Then again, what do I know? I am only a sophomore."

Much more than your years would suggest. ;) You'll do very well

Skiitifucan - LOL...I know the differences in D's choices were extreme. Colgate was always her dream school, the rural setting didn't bother her much even though we stayed overnight in Hamilton and tried to really make her see how isolated it was. But she was totally focused on the campus, loved everything about it and the opportunities other kids on campus spoke of. She quickly picked up on the high energy and closeness of the student body. She thought the admissions counselor who interviewed her was such a great guy, she still brings up that particular interview. Said even tho she didn't get in, she really liked how that interview went. She was actually wl'd at 2 other schools, both mid sized LAC's, and turned down the spots. So she was left w/IU and UW. She really did love her safeties, thank God! She's the type of kid who can make a big campus fit her tiny size...and loves loves loves! Seattle. So she's happy, we're happy. But then... this morning she asked me what I thought would happen after today on Colgate's WL. I was surprised, bc she was so upset about not getting in, and struggled to get her arms around UW and IU we had the impression she had moved on. Um, no. GC did send in a lot of stuff last week, all stuff that may help IF they go to the WL. She told H last night she's giving Colgate until May 15th, and then she's throwing away all the stuff. LOL. So she is still hoping more than she was willing to let on. Then a boy in her class told her if she gets off the WL it's only bc she doesn't need aid. Little ****ant. lol. Her sister goes to a small LAC in the NE and D has witnessed the fantastic education schools like that can provide. But I know she'll also love UW, we have family in Seattle, and she has proven over the years to be a "bloom where you are planted" type of kid. Or does that come from being a corporate brat w/lots of moves under her belt? Hahaha. She's such a good kid, we just look forward to watching her spread her wings and go. Wherever the starting point may be.

Cornell has already gone to waitlist, so perhaps there is hope here that some who have deposited at Colgate will jump ship.

Possibly - however, I can never understand how somebody could be caught between Colgate and Cornell - the schools are so very different. It has been my experience that people who leave Colgate because they are on a waitlist go to Dartmouth or Bowdoin. Plus, Colgate has become more difficult than some of Cornell's school to be admitted to.

However, that is not to burst your bubble - I hope it works out in your favor!
