So I submitted my application to Colgate and I didnt get admitted, wasnt even put on the waitlist. My sat is 1510 (new) and on a scale of 5 my gpa is 4,95… i am hungarian attending the best highschool of the country, with a toefl score above 100. I dont understand the decision, and I got pretty scared because Colgate was a safety option… what do you think about my chances with columbia? What might have been the reason of me not getting admitted? Thank youuu
Impossible to know why you weren’t accepted with so little information…but it’s way more than just grades.
Neither Colgate nor Columbia are easy to get into by any stretch and should not be considered safeties by ANYONE. What are your other safety schools?
Colgate and Columbia are both “most selective” schools according to U.S. News. As a characterization, they select by the same factors generally. However, they may select by different factors specifically. Therefore, you might still find that it will be possible to get into Columbia or one of your other reaches, but you probably did under-regard the selectivity of Colgate.
Do you need FA? Most US universities are need aware for international students and needing a lot of financial aid is a big disadvantage.
I think most US universities (think state schools) are not need aware for international students (they’re need blind for everyone), but rather they limit the number of international students (i.e., all the wealthy internationals can’t get in) and they don’t meet full need. The effect is nearly the same: It is hard for an international to get funded US higher education, but a few do. The situation is a bit different at private schools.
